Selene was helped up the ramp first. Fenric's hands shook slightly as he lifted the wheelchair all by himself and then shoved it inside. The moment Selene crossed the threshold of the RV, Matt walked over and then placed his hands on the metallic surface of the vehicle, and the air around them shifted. It was unnoticeable, subtle and almost silent, as if someone had released their breath that they had been holding.
Levi paused mid-step and turned to look behind him.
"...Am I the only one who felt that?" Ally asked as she turned to look around their surroundings.
Morrineth, however, was in a hurry to enter the RV. She turned to look at the woman, who was speaking nonsense in her eyes and questioned, "What do you mean by that? Felt what? There is nothing."
Matt clapped his hands and then said in a sharp and loud voice, "Great! Everyone, it seems like we have a really great team spirit. Look at this; we are even having group hallucinations. Everyone inside before that thing decides that we look better as his meal."
The amorphous screamed behind them, his voice tearing through the trees like a thin, sheer fabric being ripped apart. The RV shuddered as if something massive had struck it. The outer wards had been activated and denied the magic that tried to penetrate their protective shields.
No one needed to be told twice. They immediately rushed inside the RV and closed the door behind them.
Once inside, Matt rushed to the front and gunned the engine. But this time around, when the engine was turned on, it didn't hum mechanically. But instead, it hummed rhythmically. Pipes started to tick. Water shifted right inside the tanks beneath the floor. Metal walls softened the sound as it broke through the harmless fragments.
Selene watched them closely.
"You two overdid it," Selene spoke so quietly that no one other than Matt and Inez heard her.
Inez sighed. "There was nothing else that could have been done at that moment."
Matt turned the steering wheel to the right and muttered, "I have no idea what you are talking about." He then turned to look at the rest of the pack, who were staring at them. He grinned at them through the rearview mirror. "I would like to formally apologise to everyone for every joke I made about dying."
The RV rocked again. This time harder than before.
Henley grabbed the table and whipped his head to look behind them. "It's still out there, chasing us."
"Yes," said Inez with a sigh. "It's rude like that."
Another impact slammed against the RV. The windows fogged—not from the breaths of the pack members but from the condensation. What was even weirder was that instead of slipping down, the drops were climbing up, making the entire situation even more chilling than it already was.
Levi narrowed his eyes as he peered out of the window. "It seems like it is tracking something."
Morrineth's gaze snapped to Inez at once.
Inez was speechless when she realised that the woman was staring at her with the same accusatory glance that she used whenever she wanted to push the blame onto Inez's head. She said immediately, "I only said those words because I wanted to attract the attention of that thing. I didn't mean them. What? Do you really think that it is tracking me? A wolfless shifter?"
