"There is nothing more important to me than Jabez. Not even my own life."
Hearing such utter devotion, Wynne was deeply moved.
This was the exact scene Jabez walked into.
The two of them getting along perfectly.
"Mom, what are you doing here?"
"Willow got hurt trying to save you. You better treat her well, or you'll have me to answer to," Wynne scolded playfully, pointing a finger at him.
Willow cast a shy, demure glance at Jabez before quickly coming to his defense. "He treats me wonderfully."
"Hahaha," Wynne chuckled. "As he should."
"Mom, didn't you say you disliked her?"
Jabez completely blew Wynne's cover, taking a seat on the sofa. Propping his chin on his hand, he waited coolly for her to explain herself.
Wynne shot him a frantic series of looks, but he expertly pretended not to see them.
Getting called out by her own son for talking behind someone's back was mortifying.
She forced out a couple of awkward laughs, turning to the woman in the hospital bed. "Willow, I just didn't really know you back then. After spending some time with you, I've grown quite fond of you."
"You don't need to explain, Mrs. Shelby. I completely understand." Willow smiled sweetly, the perfect picture of innocent purity.
Wynne secretly breathed a sigh of relief, walking over to playfully smack Jabez's shoulder.
"Alright, I've got things to do. I won't intrude on you two lovebirds any longer."
Willow tried to sit up, but Wynne gently pushed her back down. "Focus on resting. Don't move. If you need anything, make Jabez do it."
"Okay. Thank you, Mrs. Shelby."
Wynne left the ward.
"Did you find my pendant, Jabez?" Willow asked, unable to hide her urgency.
"I did." He pulled it from his pocket, walked over to the bed, and gently fastened it around her neck.
