"It's all my fault. This is all on me. If I hadn't opened my mouth, Grandma wouldn't have gotten sick."
Milton walked up to Jabez and clapped a hand on his shoulder.
"Grandma will pull through."
Jabez's features were cold and hardened as he gave a curt nod.
Late into the night.
Charlotte softly asked Yvette, "Yvette, you haven't eaten a thing all day. What are you craving? I'll go grab something."
Yvette just kept her eyes glued to the operating room doors, utterly unresponsive.
Charlotte let out a heavy sigh and nudged her gently. Yvette finally looked at her, her eyes vacant.
"I asked, what do you want to eat? I'll go get it."
"Charlotte, I'm not hungry." Yvette tried her best to muster a smile, but her facial muscles simply wouldn't cooperate.
"You don't have to smile. Don't force yourself." Charlotte stroked her cheek sympathetically, feeling a lump form in her throat.
Milton watched them from the side. Seeing Yvette looking so thoroughly broken, his brow creased.
Just as he was about to speak, he spotted Matthew jogging around the corner.
Looking deeply anxious, Matthew stopped in front of Yvette and gently smoothed a hand over her hair.
"I'm here," he said, his voice husky.
Yvette looked up, her gaze dull until she processed who was standing in front of her. At that moment, her emotional dam finally broke.
Matthew crouched down, pulled her into his arms, and patted her back soothingly like a child. "Go ahead and cry. Let it all out. I've got you."
Yvette bit her lip hard, refusing to sob out loud, but the tears streamed relentlessly down her face.
Her muffled, repressed whimpers echoed through the corridor, absolutely gut-wrenching to hear.
"Yvette hasn't eaten yet. I'm going to run and get her some food," Charlotte told Matthew.
