The little animals looked astonishingly lifelike on the cardboard.
The children erupted in a chorus of "Wows," their eyes sparkling as they stared at their new treasures.
"Thank you, Teacher! I'm going to take super good care of my little butterfly!" a little girl said, carefully tucking the painting into her backpack.
"Me too, me too! The lion you painted is so cool!"
The other children excitedly chimed in with their own praises.
Yvette's eyes gleamed with pure joy, a radiant smile lighting up her face as a soft, maternal warmth radiated from her.
When the class was dismissed, the kids eagerly waved goodbye to her, and Yvette waved back, her heart swelling.
Maybe having a child wouldn't be so bad after all.
The thought flashed through her mind. Yvette pressed her lips together, falling deep into thought for a few seconds.
Suddenly, she found herself actually wanting to keep the baby.
Even without Jabez, she was more than capable of raising a child on her own.
*Knock, knock.*
Someone rapped on the classroom window. Yvette turned her head, freezing for a moment when she saw the person standing outside.
She quickly packed up her belongings, grabbed her bag, and hurried out.
"Yvette Yeats. All these years, what exactly have you been doing with your life?" Professor Winston Lockwood glared at her, his expression a mix of crushing disappointment and exasperated fury.
She looked exactly like a child caught doing something terribly wrong, waiting for her parent to scold her.
"Do you have any idea how long I waited for you?"
Yvette's eyes grew red, a layer of mist welling up.
"I'm so sorry, Professor Winston," Yvette bowed deeply, her apology painfully sincere.
Professor Winston was the department head of the museum's art and calligraphy restoration team, a master restorer recognized at the national level, and held colossal influence within the entire industry.
Countless people desperately tried to curry favor with him, but he was notoriously low-profile and completely ignored external flattery and brown-nosing.
Winston poured her a cup of tea and motioned for her to sit across from him.
Yvette gripped the teacup tightly, keeping her eyes glued to the floor, too ashamed to meet her mentor's disappointed gaze.
Winston launched into a blistering, unfiltered lecture. Yvette sat there obediently, taking the verbal lashing with bowed head, nodding at all the right moments.
It wasn't until his throat ran completely dry that Winston finally stopped. Yvette immediately, and very tactfully, handed him a fresh cup of tea.
He downed several cups in rapid succession before his parched throat finally felt somewhat better.
Finally, he asked about her current situation, and Yvette answered everything truthfully.
"I've got some inside information for you," Winston suddenly leaned in, his tone turning conspiratorial.
"What is it?" Yvette sat up straight. If Professor Winston considered it major inside news, it had to be earth-shattering.
"Solstice Auctions is organizing a massive restoration competition. It will be broken down into preliminaries, semi-finals, and a grand finale. The judging panel is going to be packed with the most elite titans of the industry. Anyone who makes it to the finals will get the chance to network directly with the judges—and more importantly, secure a long-term, exclusive contract with Solstice Auctions."
For Yvette, this was the opportunity of a lifetime.
