As he spoke, he intentionally checked Jabez's reaction.

Jabez's face remained its usual mask of icy indifference, though his eyes darkened considerably.

Whether it was because of the casual, familial way Matthew spoke to Lance or how close he clearly was with Yvette, Matthew didn't know.

But either way, as long as it pissed Jabez off, Matthew felt a rush of satisfaction.

"Sounds good. Come by whenever you're free, Matthew. You're always welcome here," Lance offered genuinely.

"I definitely will." Matthew stepped past Jabez with a polite nod and left the house.

Yvette said her goodbyes to Lance.

Lance smiled and nodded at her, then turned to Jabez, his tone turning frigid. "Take care, Mr. Shelby. I won't see you out."

Jabez frowned slightly.

He was highly perceptive and easily noticed Lance's cold shoulder toward him compared to the warmth shown to Matthew.

He assumed Lance was just bitter about the Joyful Plaza project and didn't think much of it.

Jabez gave a stiff nod, turning to catch up to Yvette's quick pace. "Grandma told me to come pick you up."

"You could have just called me. I can drive myself." Yvette didn't slow down. "Unless it's something urgent, don't bother coming to my family's house anymore."

He clearly hadn't expected her to say that. He snapped his head toward her, his piercing gaze locking onto her profile.

After a beat, Jabez gave a low "Hmm."

They drove their own cars, entering the Shelby Estate one after the other.

By the time they arrived, it was already six o'clock—dinner time.

The dining table was entirely covered in Yvette's favorite dishes.

Reluctantly, Yvette popped the lid open. Inside sat a diamond ring.

The center stone was the size of her thumbnail, catching the chandelier light and fracturing it into a brilliance so blinding it almost hurt to look at.

"I love it," Yvette said in a deadpan voice. She glanced at it for a second before snapping the box shut. "Grandma, my work involves handling incredibly fragile and priceless artifacts, so the company has a strict policy against wearing jewelry on the job."

Sybil had no choice but to swallow her disappointment. "Jabez, didn't you have another gift for her?"

Hearing this, Jabez casually reached into his other pocket and pulled out a necklace with absolutely no packaging.

"Thanks." Yvette reached out, her fingertips accidentally brushing against his warm skin, and unceremoniously shoved the necklace into her purse.

"Let's eat, Grandma," Yvette smiled, serving some food onto Sybil's plate.

Jabez's cold gaze lingered on Yvette for a few seconds before he looked away.
