The public restroom was just off the event plaza, only a quick stroll from the main area.
Hannah had just watched Skyler disappear around the corner when her phone vibrated in her hand.
“Harry?” she answered softly, keeping her voice down. It was the middle of the afternoon–he couldn’t possibly be calling to ask her out for a midnight snack right now, could he?
But the voice on the other end sounded breathless. “I’m here. Where are you?”
“Where?” Hannah was confused. “You mean me? I’m out right now.”
“I know–near the event entrance. How far back in line are you…?”
Harry seemed to be walking quickly, his breathing slightly uneven. Before Hannah could reply, he added, “Never mind–I see you.”
The call dropped before she could say another word.
“What in the world…?” Hannah muttered under her breath. But as she lifted her gaze, Harry was already making his way toward her through the crowd.
Her lips parted slightly, eyes widening in surprise. “Harry? What are you doing here…?”
“Shouldn’t I be?” A faint, hesitant smile touched his lips. “Didn’t… you invite me?”
“Me? Invite you?” Hannah almost let out a disbelieving laugh. She’d been doing her best to keep her distance lately–why on earth would she invite him!
Harry’s eyes shifted away briefly. Instead of answering, he pulled out his phone and showed her the text thread.
There, displayed clearly, was a message sent from her number at 5:30 that morning.
“Dr. Ashford, are you up?”
“Hannah? Everything okay? It’s pretty early.”
“Are you free today? There’s an event at the plaza near the hospital. I was hoping you could come with me. 2 PM–see you there!”
The text was followed by a kiss emoji and a couple of rose icons.

Hannah stared at the screen, her face first going pale, then flushing deep red all the way to the tips of her ears.
“Skyler!”
She grabbed Harry’s phone. Who else could have done something like this but that little schemer?
While she’d been asleep, he must have guessed her passcode and texted Harry–of all people!
Just as Hannah’s irritation was about to reach its peak, Skyler let out a loud sneeze halfway across the plaza. By then, he’d already slipped out through the rear exit of the restroom and was darting toward the medical complex across the street.
That was right directly opposite the main plaza stood Central Hospital.
His test results from the previous day were ready. To keep Hannah from catching on to his little plan, Skyler had decided to handle this part himself.
Besides, Hannah had been single for years now. Skyler had often overheard his mom gently nudging her, saying things like, “You deserve someone who truly cares for you, sweetie. Don’t put your life on hold forever.”
He didn’t fully understand all the nuances of what they discussed, but he’d gathered enough to know that finding someone special was pretty important to Hannah.
So when he’d met Harry, a plan had slowly taken shape in his clever young mind.
Now, all he could hope was that Harry would make the most of this chance!
“Achoo!” Harry sneezed suddenly nearby.
Realizing she’d overreacted, Hannah quickly handed his phone back, offering an awkward apology. “Sorry–those texts were sent by that little rascal. He’s always playing tricks… I had no idea. Honestly, I was dragged here today, too.”
“I see,” Harry replied, a tinge of disappointment coloring his tone, though he kept his smile polite.
Truth be told, when he’d first seen the flirty tone of the messages the night before, he’d found it a little out of character.
But the thought that Hannah had reached out to him had been enough to bring him here without a second thought.

Hannah hesitated before speaking again. “I should probably get going, then.”

She took a moment to really look at him. He was wearing just a thin cotton tee and relaxed–fit jeans, clearly having rushed over during his lunch break without changing. A light gleam of sweat still lingered on his forehead.
And yet…
Without his white coat or usual dress shirt, the simple, casual outfit made him look unexpectedly youthful–almost like he’d stepped out of their college years.
