It was a video call from Jason.

Isabella glanced toward her office door–the entrance to Xavier’s executive suite was firmly shut. She propped her phone against a stack of files and accepted the call.
“Jason! Did you miss Mommy?”
His smile lit up the screen, sweet enough to dissolve every trace of tension she’d been holding onto all morning.
Jason tilted his head and made a series of playful faces into the camera. Isabella knew this was his special way of showing love, so she blew a few kisses toward the screen, aiming right at his little cheeks.
Just as she expected, Jason broke into a delighted grin, his face flushing pink.
He immediately held up his drawings, presenting them one by one. Over the past few days, he’d filled page after page with scenes of Mommy–each one featuring him, Lydia, and Isabella playing together, sharing meals, or curled up asleep…
But in every picture, Skyler was pushed off to the side, standing behind the three of them like an afterthought, little more than background decor.
A little puzzled, Isabella asked, “Jason, how come you drew Skyler way over there?”
At the question, Jason’s cheerful expression faded. He pursed his lips into a pout and looked down.
“Did something happen with Skyler?” Isabella guessed.
The two boys had always been thick as thieves. Even though Jason tended to be quiet, around Skyler he turned competitive and lively–their little squabbles at home were practically a daily routine.
Jason nodded firmly, several times.
Skyler had said the dad he’d picked wasn’t right… but the one Jason found was clearly the best!
“How come?” Isabella couldn’t follow his logic, and her curiosity only grew. “It’s been a while since you saw him last. I thought you two were close.”
Jason shook his head at once, lifting his chin with a proud little shrug.

Isabella was still trying to figure out what he meant when her office door suddenly swung open
Amelia walked in carrying a large cardboard box. Startled, Isabella quickly ended the call, but Amelia was already at her desk, and it was impossible to tell whether she’d caught a glimpse of the conversation.
“You didn’t knock.”
Isabella stood, her tone cooling instantly.
Even as a new hire, Amelia should’ve known to knock before entering a private office.
“I’m so sorry, Ms. Carter,” Amelia said, sounding genuinely apologetic. “My hands were full, and I didn’t want to drop anything…
“These are Honeycrisp apples from my family’s orchard back in Washington–my mom shipped them over. I brought some for you to try…”
Watching Amelia’s slender arms struggle to lower the heavy box onto the desk, Isabella found it hard to hold onto her irritation.
“It’s all right. Just remember next time.”
As soon as the words left her mouth, Amelia nodded eagerly, her expression sincere. “Absolutely, Ms. Carter.”
“About the apples-”
“Please, don’t say no,” Amelia cut in gently, her voice earnest. “If it weren’t for your help today, I might’ve lost this job… I really want you to have them.”
Seeing the hopeful look in the younger woman’s eyes, Isabella softened. She picked out one large, glossy apple and set it near her monitor.
“I’m not refusing–it’s just that I could never finish all of these before they go bad. Why don’t you share the rest with the team? Thank you, though.”
Amelia let out a subtle breath of relief. She quickly pulled out two more apples and offered them. “At least take a couple extra, please?”
After distributing the apples, Amelia returned to her desk just outside the CEO’s office. A text notification flashed on her phone.
“Everything on track?”

Her gaze drifted briefly toward Isabella’s office. Earlier, she’d definitely seen her on a video call… with a child.
Across town, the city’s main square was packed with a holiday crowd.
