Chapter 116 More Than a Stand–In
After a moment, Hannah finally snapped out of her daze…

But by then, she was already pressed tightly against Harry–face to face, their eyes locked.
“Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!”
By the time Hannah realized what was happening, it was too late. The whole crowd below– even the other competing couples and the event staff–were cheering wildly, as if the night wouldn’t be complete without a public display of affection.
Hannah quickly tried to pull her hands free from Harry’s and slip away, but his grip held firm.
Then, he drew her close again and leaned in, placing a soft, deliberate kiss on her forehead.
It was just a brief touch–gentle but intentional.
Hannah’s usually cool skin burned hot where his lips had been…
She stared up at him, stunned. Harry’s face was flushed too, but his clear eyes held hers steadily, without a trace of hesitation.
“Sorry,” he murmured, his Adam’s apple bobbing nervously.
Hannah came back to herself and pushed him away before hurrying off the stage.
But the crowd only grew more enthusiastic. To them, the young couple was just caught up in a sweet, shy moment–how adorable was that?
Hannah didn’t stop until she was well away from the event area.
She touched her forehead, then her cheeks–everything felt feverish, as if she’d been standing too close to a fire.
Since when had Harry become so bold? Using the moment to steal a kiss like that…
The more she thought about it, the more flustered she felt. Only after the crowd had mostly dispersed did she go back to find him.
Harry had already collected their prizes. First place was the race car Skyler wanted, second was a pure white kitten, and third was a tube of luxury lipstick.
The moment Hannah saw the kitten, her eyes lit up.

Forgetting her awkwardness for a second, she followed the staff member carrying the pet carrier straight over to the couple who had won it.
“This kitten is absolutely adorable…”
Hannah’s voice softened completely–that round little face, those tiny paws…
Ever since she was a kid, she’d dreamed of having a cat of her own. But growing up in the Carter family, pets were strictly off–limits–not even a goldfish was allowed.
Seeing how taken Hannah was with the kitten, the couple carefully lifted it from the carrier and offered it to her.
“Want to hold her?”
“Thank you!”
Overwhelmed with delight, Hannah cradled the kitten in her arms. Its amber eyes sparkled like gemstones–bright and captivating.
A little nervous, the kitten dug its claws gently into Hannah’s shoulder and let out a soft, timid
meow.
“Meow…”
That delicate sound melted Hannah’s heart on the spot.
She nuzzled her cheek against the kitten’s head, practically floating with happiness.
Watching her, the couple exchanged a warm glance. The young woman spoke up, “If you love her that much, maybe we could trade prizes?”
Her boyfriend nodded. “We’re in a tiny apartment right now–not really fair to keep a cat cooped up.”
“Well…”
Hannah nearly said yes, but then she hesitated.
“That’s so kind of you, but… my place isn’t really set up for a pet either.”
The woman took the kitten back, but it clung to Hannah’s shoulder, reluctant to let go. As it was placed into the carrier, it looked right at Hannah and mewed again, soft and pleading.
Hannah’s heart ached, and she almost reached out once more.

“Aww, she really likes you too,” the woman said wistfully, before she and her boyfriend walked away, carrier in hand.
Hannah watched them go, her eyes following the carrier until it disappeared into the crowd.
“You really loved that kitten, didn’t you?”
Harry’s voice came from beside her, gentle. Hannah let out a quiet sigh. “Yeah.”
“Then why didn’t you trade for it?”
He’d been watching her earlier, surprised to see her so genuinely happy–unguarded and glowing, like a kid without a care.
In Harry’s memory, Hannah lived freely, but her joy always seemed measured, as if held back by some invisible line.
“Because…” Hannah glanced at him, a faint smile touching her lips as she took the race car from his hands and tucked it into her tote. “Skyler wanted this one.”
“Just because of that?” Harry’s gaze lingered, making her shift slightly. “What else? I can’t go back on a promise to a kid.”
She patted her now–full bag. “Thanks for your help today. But you really didn’t have to… take things that far.”
Her voice softened on the last few words, and she made a point of not quite meeting his
eyes.
Her tone wasn’t cold, but it wasn’t warm either–just enough to let him know that “kiss” hadn’t been okay with her.
“I’m sorry,” Harry said, calmer and steadier than she’d expected. “But I wasn’t playing around. I just… couldn’t help myself.”
