Not to mention, behind Moore Group stood the full influence of the Moore family. Even if Whitman Properties managed to hold their own for a while, as long as Moore Group refused to back off, dragging them down again would only be a matter of time.
“I’d suggest cutting your losses now before you take on any more risk.”
Barry quickly sent another message.
Isabella thought it over before asking, “Is there really no way to turn this around?”
“Not unless Moore Group decides to back down on their own.” Barry’s reply came almost instantly.
Getting Xavier to back down willingly… Isabella’s mind drifted again to the Moore Group encryption key, but she pushed the thought away just as quickly.
Xavier played hardball–she couldn’t bring herself to go that far.
With no clear path forward, she set the matter aside for now. But just as she was about to log off, another message from Barry came through.
“If you’re serious about helping the Whitmans, you could start by looking into why their project was shut down.”
It was something Isabella had already considered, though she hadn’t figured out how to dig into it yet.
Even though her original reason for joining Moore Group had been to help the Whitman family through this crisis, now that she was here, she hesitated.
After all, on paper, she was still a Moore Group shareholder and its vice president…
“I understand. I’ll see how things play out,” she replied after a long pause.
“If you stay stuck in the middle, you’ll only make things harder on yourself. You can only pick one side–Whitman Properties or Moore Group.”
Barry seemed to see right through her hesitation, his words sharp and clear.
He was right–she was already caught in between.
Closing her laptop, Isabella rubbed her temples. What was wrong with her lately…?

She knew Xavier wasn’t being sincere with her, yet she kept letting her guard down, over and over… unable to walk away.
Where had she gone wrong? She should’ve moved on by now.
It was nearly time to leave when Isabella finally returned to her office.
Xavier was still in a meeting, the conference room door firmly shut.
Just then, her phone buzzed. Sander’s name flashed on the screen.
Isabella hesitated a moment before answering.
Sander didn’t know she was the investor, so if he was calling, it had to be about Jason… or maybe it was related to what he’d confessed last time.
“Hey Sander,” she kept her tone light. “What’s up?”
“Are you… still at Moore Group?” he asked carefully. “I heard you went back.”
“Word travels fast,” she said, glancing toward the hallway outside her office. Had Sander planted someone inside Moore Group?
Then again, it wasn’t entirely surprising. He’d mentioned before that he’d find ways to keep tabs on the company’s moves.
But even if he’d bribed an employee or two, it wouldn’t help much. She used to handle major projects here and still couldn’t access their core plans–a low–level source wouldn’t change that.
“Yeah, I also heard Xavier announced your position to the whole company.”
Sander’s voice sounded subdued, almost displeased.
Isabella paused briefly, then shifted the subject. “Was there something else, Sander? I’ve still got some work to wrap up here. Maybe we can talk later-”
“It’s about Jason,” Sander finally said. “There’s been a change in his condition.”
“What happened to Jason?” Her heart jumped at his words, even though she’d just spoken to Jason that afternoon and he’d seemed perfectly fine.
“Don’t worry,” Sander reassured her. “I meant there are signs he might be improving. Are you free tonight? We could go over the details.”

Isabella really wanted to say no.
Ever since Sander’s confession, everything he said felt like it had an ulterior motive.
“Can’t we just talk over the phone?” she asked carefully.

“I know what you’re worried about. I’m Jason’s therapist and his teacher. I wouldn’t use him as
an excuse.”
Sander’s tone cooled, carrying a hint of detachment.
“Alright then,” Isabella replied, feeling awkward. “I’ll come by the school now.”
After hanging up, she shut down her computer, gathered her things, and headed out.
Jason had been at the therapy center for a while now. If Sander was really just making excuses to see her… then maybe this whole arrangement wasn’t worth continuing.
Amelia watched from the window as Isabella left the building, then turned, grabbed her car keys, and stepped out into the late afternoon light.
Half an hour later, Isabella pulled up to the therapy center. Before she could even call Sander, she spotted him under a large oak tree near the entrance, holding Jason in his arms.
The two of them looked peaceful together, almost like father and son.
Jason seemed to really like Sander, his small face bright with a happy smile.
When he noticed Isabella, he immediately turned and reached for her eagerly.
She took him from Sander’s arms as she spoke. “Why are you waiting outside?”
The little boy felt heavier–clearly the meals at the center were agreeing with him.
At home, Jason never ate with the same enthusiasm as Skyler and had always been a few pounds lighter.
“We came out because I promised Jason I’d take him somewhere today,” Sander said softly, his eyes drifting toward the boy in her arms.
