The moment Sander stepped out of the private room, a server approached promptly. After confirming the items they had ordered, she was about to leave when Sander stopped her politely.
“Earlier, you mentioned seeing a child inside?”
His expression remained friendly and approachable.
The server seemed less flustered now. She nodded, then quickly shook her head. “I must have been mistaken, sir. My apologies.”
“No trouble at all. I was just curious,” Sander replied smoothly, not pressing the matter. Through his glasses, he thought he caught a fleeting glimpse of a small shadow shifting near the corridor’s end.
After the server walked away, Sander didn’t return directly to the dining room. Instead, he turned and made his way toward the large window at the end of the hallway.
Skyler, who had been hiding around the corner, spotted Sander moving away and quickly adjusted his face mask before trailing quietly behind.
He had come tonight looking for Jason, but when he arrived near the therapy center, he saw Jason leaving with this unfamiliar man.
The two seemed to have plans—they’d even ended up at this restaurant to have dinner with Mom.
Was this man the father Jason had found?
Skyler frowned. When the man spoke to the server earlier, Skyler caught a side view of his face. Something about him felt familiar, like he’d seen him somewhere before.
Sensing a presence behind him, Sander allowed a slight curve to form on his lips. He casually pulled out his phone.
Holding the screen near his face, he used its reflection to glimpse a small figure tailing him.
The hallway ended in a dead end.
Sander turned around abruptly, but the little shadow that should have been right behind him had vanished without a sound.

The area was lined with private dining rooms–nowhere obvious to hide.

Skyler, pressed into the recess beside the stairwell entrance, let out a soft, controlled breath.
That was close.
Good thing he hadn’t followed too closely and had slipped into a hiding spot in time.
This man was way too observant.
Once his heartbeat steadied, Skyler’s eyes cooled with recognition. He remembered now.
This was the person he’d seen lurking around his father’s corporate building before.
He was definitely up to something.
Back in the private room, Isabella was about to offer Jason a piece of fruit when the little boy turned his head away, clearly not interested.
His gaze kept drifting toward the door, as though waiting for Sander to return.
Isabella felt a small sting. “What’s wrong? Now that you have a new friend, you don’t need Mom anymore?”
Jason pressed his lips together and shook his head, but his small face was clouded with frustration.
Just as Isabella was beginning to feel confused, her phone buzzed. It was Xavier.
Why would Xavier be calling her at this hour?
Isabella glanced at the time—just past eight. Did he actually finish work early today?
When she’d left Moore Group earlier, she’d heard all departments were tied up with quarterly reviews. In the past, on days like these, Xavier would keep everyone working until nine or ten at night.
Demanding as he could be, once those quarterly meetings wrapped up, every department received a generous bonus.
When it came to compensation and benefits, Xavier never cut corners. That was why, no matter how intense the workload, people still competed to stay at Moore Group.
After a brief hesitation, Isabella signaled Jason to stay quiet and answered the call.

“Where are you?” The moment the line connected, Xavier’s deep voice came through, low and smooth.
He sounded tired, a little rough around the edges, yet the tone was still pleasant.
And maybe it was her imagination, but Isabella thought he sounded unusually gentle tonight.
“I’m off work,” Isabella replied instinctively, sidestepping the question.
Even though they’d agreed to give each other space and not check in constantly, meeting Sander behind Xavier’s back always left her feeling uneasy… almost guilty.
“I know.” Xavier was standing in Isabella’s dark, empty office, his gaze sweeping the quiet space. “Did you go home?”
Isabella automatically said “yes,” then quickly changed the subject. “Isn’t today packed with quarterly reviews? Are you done already?”
There was a slight pause on Xavier’s end.
When he spoke again, there was a subtle warmth in his voice, so light she almost missed it. “You knew about the quarterly meeting. You even remembered the timing.”
Hearing him say that made Isabella feel a little unsettled.
The way he phrased it… it sounded almost meaningful.
Was Xavier implying that because she knew his schedule, she was paying attention to him?
“No, I just overheard-”
“The agenda today was definitely full,” Xavier cut in, his tone taking on a lazy, almost relaxed edge. “But I’ll wrap things up as early as I can.”
Isabella parted her lips slightly, momentarily at a loss for words.
