But the moment she turned around, she nearly tripped over a little boy who had dashed right into her leg.
“Whoa–careful there, sweetie!”
The waitress quickly steadied the child. No one else was around–just a quiet hallway lined with closed private dining rooms behind him.
He looked up at her with wide, innocent eyes.
“Excuse me, miss… are there three people in that room? Like… a family?”
His voice was soft and sweet, enough to melt anyone’s heart.
She’d never seen such an adorable kid. Dressed in a sharp, stylish outfit, he looked like a little star straight out of a catalog.
The only thing was… he seemed familiar. Hadn’t she just seen a face like that somewhere?
“Um,
yes, I think so,” the waitress replied, snapping out of her daze. She smiled down at him, then glanced around once more. Still no parent in sight.
“Honey, are you lost? I can help you find your family.”
“No, I’m okay–thank you!” the boy chirped brightly before turning and scurrying down the hallway.
The waitress considered going after him–running wasn’t really allowed in the dining area- but just then another server emerged from a private room and called her over.
“Hey, sorry to interrupt–could you bring the fruit platter to table seven first? They’re waiting.”
“Sure, no problem.”
Nodding, she headed straight for the private dining room.
It was spacious inside. A tray of freshly cut fruit was already arranged on the sideboard.
She knocked gently, entered, and set the platter in the center of the table. But out of the corner
of her eye, she caught sight of a little boy seated across from her.
For a second, she froze. “Wait… weren’t you just outside?”

The boy she’d spoken to in the hallway looked exactly like this one.
But she clearly remembered that child running in the opposite direction.
There was no way he could have gotten here before her…

Noticing the waitress staring, Jason grew shy at once. He slid down from his chair and hurried over to Isabella’s side.
Isabella lifted him into her lap and glanced at the waitress, puzzled. “Outside? No, he came in
with us.”
“Oh… really?” The waitress‘ cheeks flushed. After a brief pause, she ducked her head apologetically. “I’m so sorry. I must’ve gotten confused. Please excuse me.”
With that, she hurried out of the room.
Truth was, the boy in the private room looked nothing like the one who had spoken to her earlier.
Not his clothes, not his manner—nothing matched.
Once in the hallway, the waitress rubbed her eyes firmly. She’d been pulling too many late shifts lately, and her sleep had been awful. Maybe she really was seeing things.
After the waitress left, though, Isabella couldn’t shake a faint feeling that something was off.
She hadn’t thought much of it at first, but the waitress‘ remark suggested she’d seen Jason outside the room–alone.
Sander’s gaze followed the waitress until she disappeared from view.
“Some of the staff here can be a bit distracted,” he said quietly to Isabella. “Did it startle Jason?”
“He’s fine. He just gets nervous when strangers stare.”
Isabella held Jason a little closer as she said it, soothing him with a gentle squeeze.
“Why don’t you both take a look and see what you’d like?” Sander rose politely and slid the menu toward Isabella and Jason.
Jason looked something.
