Sander had leaned in, his forehead almost touching Isabella’s, when a loud, sudden burst of crying shattered the moment.
They had been sitting in the restaurant’s lounge area. Now, a small figure stood just behind them. Isabella turned to find Jason weeping uncontrollably, his little face crumpled in distress as he rubbed at his eyes, his whole body trembling.
Without another thought for Sander, she sprang up and rushed to the boy’s side, her heart pounding.
She quickly ran her hands over his arms and legs, checking for any sign of injury. “Jason, sweetheart, what’s wrong? Did you get hurt? Tell me where it hurts.”
“Wahhh… wahhh…” He didn’t answer, just kept sobbing into his hands.
Fear clenched Isabella’s chest. She scooped him up immediately, holding his shaking form close. “I don’t know what’s going on with him. I need to take him to the ER.”
She was already turning toward the exit when Sander stepped forward. “Let me take a look. I’ve dealt with kids before.”
Isabella hesitated, but Jason’s small hands tightened around her neck, his face buried stubbornly against her shoulder. She could feel his silent refusal.
“It’s okay. I’d feel better having a doctor check him out,” she said, gently rejecting Sander’s offer.
Sander studied the child in her arms, a flicker of suspicion crossing his features.
Seeing her resolve, he didn’t press further. “At least let me drive you. I won’t feel right just letting you go.”
Her mind was wholly occupied with worry for Jason, so Isabella simply nodded, too distracted to argue.
Just as the three of them neared the entrance, a familiar voice carried from the host stand near the door.
“Excuse me has anyone seen a guest who looks like this?”
Isabella recognized him first.
Jacob.
If Jacob was here, then Xavier must be…
Her stomach dropped. She glanced nervously at Sander. By then, a server had already pointed Jacob in their direction, and he was walking straight toward the lounge.
Acting on instinct, Sander turned and guided Isabella and Jason back, shielding them in a narrow alcove beside a decorative pillar. He positioned himself with his back to the dining room, blocking Jacob’s line of
sight.
Luckily, Jacob passed by without glancing their way.

“That was close,” Sander murmured, his voice low. He leaned slightly toward Isabella, the space between them filled only by Jason. “Looks like Xavier’s already searching for you.”
“Thank you…” Isabella’s cheeks warmed. With Jason held between them, their proximity felt suddenly intimate, the air growing warmer in the confined space.
“You should hand Jason over to me now. If Xavier sees him-”
“Sees what?”
A colder, deeper voice cut through Sander’s sentence, freezing the words in the air.
Isabella flinched. Her eyes shifted to a point just behind Sander. Xavier’s tall frame now stood there, though she hadn’t heard him approach.
At the same time, Jacob had quietly dismissed the remaining staff and was ushering the last few customers out, locking the front door afterward. Sensing the tension, he kept his distance, waiting near the entrance under Xavier’s silent instruction.
The restaurant fell into a dead silence, the air growing thick and frosty. A palpable tension settled over them, heavy and brittle, as if something were about to snap.
Isabella instinctively held Jason tighter.
Sander’s expression shifted almost imperceptibly. After a beat, he turned to face his cousin, his demeanor smoothing into casual calm. “Xavier. What brings you here?”
Even the faint smile he managed seemed deliberate, almost studied.
To Xavier, that smile was nothing but pure provocation.
“You haven’t answered my question.” Xavier’s words were measured, each one sharp enough to cut. His gaze swept over Isabella, who couldn’t bring herself to meet his eyes. Her palms, gripping Jason, were damp with cold sweat.
This is bad. Him finding me here with Sander, like this… He must think the worst.
And with Jason here… her thoughts raced.
Sander kept his tone light. “Xavier, I was just treating Isabella and a child from the therapy center to lunch today. Didn’t want you to get the wrong idea.”
“A child?” Xavier’s eyes narrowed, but he couldn’t see the boy’s face clearly. He took a step forward, but Sander shifted subtly, maintaining his protective stance in front of Isabella and Jason.
“Really, it’s nothing. Just a kid from the therapy center I volunteer with…”
“If the child is from the therapy center, you have no authority to take him out without consent.” Xavier’s tone was deceptively even, betraying no anger on his face–only a chilling, steady coldness that seemed to seep into the space around them.
