Xavier sank back into his chair, one hand covering his face, his knuckles faintly trembling. Amelia watched him from the corner of her eye, and something in her chest softened just a little.
After quietly straightening up the office, she slipped out to retrieve something from her bag. Returning, she set a small bottle gently on the edge of his desk.
“Mr. Moore, these are herbal stress–relief tablets. They help with tension and fatigue–if you’re feeling overwhelmed.”
She kept her voice low, almost tentative.
As she turned to leave, Xavier’s cool tone cut through the quiet. “Take them away. I don’t need them.”
Amelia paused, then wordlessly retrieved the bottle and exited.
That evening, at the corporate dinner, Xavier’s demeanor remained stern throughout. Even with key clients, his replies were clipped and direct.
There was one thing, however, he didn’t refuse: drinks.
Jacob knew Xavier shouldn’t be drinking. Along with a few other senior staff, he tried to intercept the glasses, but Xavier began pouring for himself.
Just as a flush began to color Xavier’s cheeks, Amelia reached over and carefully took the glass from his hand. He shot her a sharp look. “Give that back.”
“Mr. Moore, it’s not good for your health. If you keep going, Mrs. Moore will worry.”
Worry? She wouldn’t…
Xavier held her gaze coldly, picked up a fresh glass, and poured himself another half–measure.
Unable to stop him directly, Amelia lifted her own wine glass and drained it in one go.
“Then I’ll join you, Mr. Moore.”
She winced slightly–the strong liquor burned her throat and stung her eyes.
Xavier paid her no mind.

Seeing this, Jacob quickly moved Amelia’s glass farther away. “Amelia, what are you doing? Even if the boss shouldn’t drink, his tolerance is still decent. Besides, Dr. Ashford prescribed something for occasions like this–a little is fine. But you… if you end up drunk, that won’t help
anyone.”
Amelia seemed young, almost naïve–why was she being so rash?
Drinking alongside Xavier like this… Didn’t she worry about crossing a line?
Xavier had always kept women at a distance. Linda was proof enough.
After Isabella left, the role of personal assistant had stayed empty for months, with Jacob covering both professional and private tasks.
Now that Amelia was finally here to lighten the load, he was genuinely concerned she might overstep.
“It’s alright,” Amelia said with a strained smile, her cheeks already visibly pink. “I can hold my liquor… reasonably well.”
Jacob didn’t quite know how to respond, offering only an uneasy smile in return.
Xavier could feel warmth spreading through him, the tightness in his chest easing just a fraction. Abruptly, he stood and stepped away from the table, phone in hand.
The dinner continued, lively and loud. Jacob was about to follow when a client caught his arm, pulling him into conversation.
“Jacob, I’ll check on Mr. Moore. You stay and entertain the guests.”
Amelia rose immediately, already moving before Jacob could reply.
Xavier walked down the hallway, steps unsteady. He lifted a hand to loosen his tie, then stilled midway.
A memory surfaced–Isabella, straightening this very tie for him, her fingers gentle and sure.
His body wavered; he braced heavily against the wall.
“Mr. Moore!”
Amelia hurried over, reaching to support his arm, but he shook her off before she could steady him.
“Don’t touch me.”

Even slurred with drink, his voice held a clear, unyielding command.
“You’ve had too much. Let me help you back-

Xavier drew a slow breath, forearm pressed to the wall. A dull ache was building behind his temples.
