Isabella swallowed hard, the news hitting her with a suddenness that left her emotionally stunned. For a moment, she couldn’t process anything at all.
“Xavier… do you have any idea what you’re saying?”
She almost reached out to check if he had a fever, but stopped herself mid–motion. He didn’t look out of his mind–just painfully serious.
“Jason needs me, and legally, we’re bound by a contract. A divorce is out of the question, plain and simple.”
Xavier brushed past her question and moved back toward his desk.
“As for the family, don’t worry. I’ve already had Jacob take care of it. To the public–and to everyone who matters–Jason will be introduced as my biological son.”
His tone was matter–of–fact, almost detached, but Isabella didn’t miss the faint flush that colored his cheeks.
Was she imagining things?
Was Xavier actually… embarrassed after what he’d just confessed? Avoiding eye contact like this?
“I’ve got a meeting soon,” he said quickly, still not looking at her. He lightly touched the bridge of his nose–a small, awkward gesture Isabella caught clearly. “If you’re not in a rush, we can leave together after work. I’ll have Jacob reserve a table for dinner.”
She almost wanted to laugh, but a bitter ache spread through her chest instead.
Xavier’s feelings had come out of nowhere, turning all their painful history into some kind of cruel joke.
Every heartache, every lonely night over the years–he understood none of it.
“Xavier, have you forgotten everything that fell apart between us five years ago?” she said, her voice quiet but firm. “Don’t you think it’s a little too late for all this now?”
Xavier didn’t answer. He looked down, his hand tightening around his own wrist.
“I know I wasn’t good to you before,” he said finally. “But from now on, I’ll learn. I’ll learn how to be good to you.”

“Good to me?” Isabella’s voice softened, edged with sadness. “Did you ever stop to ask if I still have feelings for you? If I even want to be with you anymore?”
He assumed that if he wanted a future, they should have one.
What did that make her–an item on his checklist?
He could act like the past was erasable, but for her, some wounds never truly close.
And how could someone who didn’t know the first thing about love even talk about “liking” someone?
Xavier had asked himself Isabella’s question countless times. He’d braced for every possible rejection.
Yet in the end, he couldn’t accept any of those answers, so he chose to ignore them.
The truth was, he didn’t know how to love.
But even more than that, he didn’t know how to let go of something–someone–his heart had decided it wanted.
“The family already knows about Jason,” Xavier pressed on, his expression deliberately blank. “What they’ve been told is that he’s their great–grandson.”
He kept his eyes away from hers as he spoke, throat dry and chest tight.
He could already picture the disgust on her face.
“What did you just say?”
Isabella’s heart dropped.
With his grandfather’s influence and stubborn pride, there was no way the family would ever let her take Jason away now.
Even if she tried to explain, the Moores would side with Xavier–not her.
He had backed her into a corner, leaving no way out.
“You don’t really have a choice here,” Xavier continued, hitting right where it hurt most- Jason’s well–being. “Forget the family for a second. Jason needs a father. And more than anything, he needs treatment.”
His words were calm, calculated, like he was presenting a business negotiation.

Isabella nodded slowly. He had covered every angle, flawlessly. There was nothing left for her to negotiate.
“You haven’t changed at all, Xavier.”
He was still the same cold, selfish man who put his own desires above everyone else’s feelings.
And for a moment, she had almost let herself hope.
Without another word, Isabella turned and walked out of his office.
In the hallway, she nearly bumped into Amelia again. “Mrs. Moore-”
But Isabella didn’t stop. She returned to her own office, grabbed her purse, and left without looking back.
A moment later, Xavier stepped out into the hall as well.
He didn’t follow her, just watched her figure disappear around the corner, his face darkening.
