“Jacob is still tying up some loose ends with the clients, so he couldn’t drive Mr. Moore home. Instead, Mr. Moore has handed his car keys to me. I’ll be taking him back tonight.
“Please don’t worry, Mrs. Moore.”
Amelia’s tone was polished and pleasant, each word delivered with a practiced, reassuring clarity.
Yet, Isabella couldn’t shake a faint, nagging irritation.
Normally, Jacob was the one who handled these things–anything related to Xavier’s whereabouts and needs. It had never been a woman taking care of him like this. Well, except for her, once upon a time.
“Is that right?” Isabella’s voice came out soft, almost muted. “He called me just a little while ago asking to be picked up. I thought something might be wrong.”
“So.. will you be coming, Mrs. Moore?” Amelia replied.
“Mr. Moore would certainly be pleased to know you were on your way.”
Isabella pressed her lips together, drawing a quiet, steadying breath.
“I was actually about to turn in for the night. It’s probably best if I leave it to you to bring him back.”
She already has the keys anyway.
If Xavier had really asked Amelia to drive, then why had he called her earlier, slurring and emotional?
Besides, Harry had warned him about drinking. Did he have no self–control at all?
“All right, Mrs. Moore.”
Amelia’s reply was level, so professionally detached it felt almost cold.
But the moment the call ended, the phone in Amelia’s hand was suddenly snatched away.
“Isabella… you’re really something else.” A low, rough voice cut through the quiet.
Amelia startled–behind her, the unsteady man seemed to have sobered up in an instant.
“You were the one who came after me back then…
“You were the one who said you wanted to marry me…
‘However messed up I am, you’re the one who chose me…
“So why?

“Why do you think you can just walk away whenever you feel like it?”
Xavier didn’t look drunk, but every word was edged with a raw, frantic intensity.

Amelia stood frozen, and for a moment, even Isabella on the other end of the line was at a loss for words.
“Let me make something clear, Isabella–don’t even think about vanishing like you did five years ago. Don’t you dare dream of it!”
Xavier’s voice rose as he spoke, and he began staggering forward.
th
Amelia rushed after him. “Mr. Moore, let me just take you home! Whatever you need to say, you can tell Mrs. Moore there!”
“You won’t come… fine. You can refuse to come.
“But if you won’t… then I’m staying right here. I’m not going anywhere.”
Growing more agitated by the second, Xavier suddenly hurled the phone against the wall.
Amelia gasped, hurrying over to find it shattered on the ground,
“Xavier…”
On the other end, Isabella heard a sharp, screeching noise through the receiver, frowned, and then the line went dead.
She lifted her gaze to her own reflection in the bathroom mirror, staring at the troubled woman looking back at her, feeling suddenly unmoored.
That torrent of desperate accusations had left her speechless… and deeply shaken.
His words from earlier that day echoed in her ears once more.
Could it be… Xavier has actually fallen for me?
“Tap–tap, tap–tap-”
The bathroom door rattled gently.
Isabella snapped out of her thoughts and opened it to find little Skyler standing there, looking up at her with wide, curious eyes.
“What are you doing here? Eavesdropping?”
Isabella shot him a helpless look.
If it weren’t for him, she wouldn’t have picked up that troublesome call in the first place.

Skyler trailed closely behind her. Just as she was about to climb into bed, he suddenly darted forward and wrapped his arms around her leg, holding her back with a gentle tug.
“What?”
Isabella understood exactly what he meant
“You want me to go?”
Skyler nodded vigorously.
Of course. He’d heard everything.
“But someone’s already driving him back. If I go now… it’ll just seem like…”
Like she had no self–respect left.
She’d said it before–even if he had feelings for her, she didn’t want him back.
How could Xavier, after everything he’d done, expect things to go back to the way they were just because he claimed to care?
Since when was anything in life that easy?

After throwing the phone, Xavier slumped against the wall and closed his eyes.
Amelia gathered the broken pieces, then quickly checked on him. His breathing was even, his skin cool–no sign of a fever. He seemed okay, physically at least.
She tried to help him up, but he was too heavy for her to move alone.
Just then, her phone buzzed.
It was Linda.
A subtle shift crossed Amelia’s expression before she answered. “Linda.”
“Amelia, are you free right now? There’s something I wanted to talk to you about…”
Linda’s voice was sweet, almost honeyed.
Amelia didn’t need to guess to know what–or who–she was really asking about.
Ever since Teresa had brushed off her pleas for help, Megan had taken Linda’s phone away, wanting her daughter to forget about Xavier and calm down.
But Linda wasn’t the type to let things go. After making a scene all day, she’d finally gotten her phone back.

Even if she couldn’t be by Xavier’s side, she was determined to know what was happening with him—the sooner,
the better.
“Actually, Linda, I’m with Mr. Moore right now… so it’s not the best time.”
There was a slight pause on the other end. Xavier? Why is he still out so late…”
