Chapter 146 Mother’s Help
What was he doing with Amelia so late? Shouldn’t he have been with Isabella tonight?

“We had a dinner, and Mr. Moore drank too much… he asked me to take him back. I didn’t really know what else to do,” Amelia explained, letting a note of uncertainty linger in her voice. “Jacob’s tied up with work and can’t come help… so it’s just me here.”
“Where are you now?” Linda cut in, feeling a rise of anxiety.
Xavier never let himself get this drunk in public. Had things completely fallen apart with Isabella after he found out about the baby?
“Actually, it’s not too far from your place,” Amelia replied and gave the name of the hotel.
“Let me come get you. I was about to head out to pick something up anyway. Give me ten minutes.”
“Oh no, that’s too much trouble-”
“It’s no trouble. Xavier’s my friend too, and if Jacob’s busy, you can’t handle him alone.” Linda didn’t wait for further objections. “Stay put and look after him. I’ll be right there.”
Hanging up, Linda changed quickly. The night was cool, but she chose a thin sky–blue dress and layered it with a soft white cardigan.
Downstairs, her mother Megan was watching TV in the living room.
“Going out this late?” Megan asked, her tone sharp.
“Just running to the store nearby. Need some air, too.” Linda kept her expression neutral as she fastened her coat,
To keep her from holding onto false hope over Xavier, Ray had grounded her. But Megan had felt sorry for her- keeping her cooped up while she was upset seemed only to make things worse.
After some convincing, Ray agreed to let Linda take short walks at night, though only after ten and never beyond their neighborhood.
Just yesterday, Megan had offered to join her, but Linda had refused, too down to even step outside. Megan had finally given Linda her phone back so she could at least talk to friends.
“I’ll come with you,” Megan said, starting to get up.
“It’s fine, Mom. I won’t be long. I’d like a little time alone.” Linda’s refusal was firm as she turned toward the door. “Wait.” Megan’s voice tightened. She studied her daughter closely.
Yesterday, Linda had been moping, going on about finding a way to reach Xavier. Now she seemed almost calm- and she’d clearly put some thought into her outfit.

what’s going on? Are you planning to see Xavier again?”

Megan saw right through the act. She’d taken the phone in the first place because she was afraid Linda was still clinging to him.
The way Xavier had treated her was heartless, and it infuriated Megan as much as it broke her heart. If the Allens held more power than the Moores, maybe things would be different–but as it was, they still had to tread carefully around Xavier and his family.
To Rey, Linda’s refusal to let go was shameful, an embarrassment to the family. To Megan, it felt like watching her daughter walk straight into fire.
“I’m just going out to clear my head,” Linda said, a hint of hurt in her voice. “You said yourself I should get some air.”
Megan’s gaze was steady and cool. “Is he really the only man in the world worth this?”
Seeing she couldn’t fool her mother, Linda dropped the pretense. “Please, Mom. This is my choice. I’ll deal with whatever comes.”
“Your father would be so disappointed to see you like this.” Megan’s anger surged, but she held back when she noticed the shine of tears in Linda’s eyes. What a miserable situation.
“Wait here two minutes,” Megan said through gritted teeth. She hurried to her room and returned with a small unmarked bottle. “Take this.”
She pressed it firmly into Linda’s hand.
“What is it?” Linda glanced from the bottle to her mother’s strained expression, and understanding dawned.
“Do what you have to do. If you’re set on being with Xavier, don’t let him walk all over you like he did five years ago.” Megan’s voice lowered, fierce and intent in a way Linda had never heard before. “This time, I’ll stand by you no matter what it takes.”
“Mom…” Tears welled in Linda’s eyes. She pulled Megan into a tight hug.
Less than ten minutes later, Amelia spotted Linda at the hotel entrance.
Linda had driven straight over, and even in heels, her steps were quick and determined.
“Linda! Over here!”
