Xavier instinctively reached for his phone. Linda, who had just set down a glass of water on the nightstand, spoke up quietly. “You were in no state earlier… you ended up breaking your phone in front of Amelia.
“Amelia’s still new–she’s never handled anything like this before. Jacob was tied up with something else, and since I was close by, I came to get you….
“Xavier…”
Before she could finish, Linda watched as he pushed himself up from the bed and headed straight for the door.
But his steps were unsteady. After only a couple of strides, he swayed sideways toward the wall. Afraid he might collapse, Linda quickly moved forward and caught his arm to support him.
“I told you I never want to see you again!”
Her hand was shoved away. Xavier’s voice was rough
cold as ice.
Seeing him about to storm out, Linda clenched her jaw and stepped directly into his path, blocking the door.
“I know you don’t want to see me! You want to go find Isabella!”
Her voice shook with emotion, and tears sprang quickly to the corners of her eyes.
“But I don’t expect anything… I just wanted to make sure you were okay…
“Amelia told me Isabella didn’t even care enough to come get you… You called her, and she wouldn’t even
answer…
“Xavier, you’ve always treated her so well, and yet she still chose someone else over you! Five years ago, five years later–nothing’s changed!”
and
now,
“Enough!”
Xavier couldn’t take anymore. His head was pounding worse than before, and his whole body felt strangely off- balance, burning up from the inside.
He cut her off sharply, pushing her aside, but Linda immediately wrapped her arms around his waist from behind. Xavier went rigid. A cold, almost dangerous energy rolled off him. “Let go,” he gritted out.
Linda was terrified, but she summoned every bit of strength she had, locking her fingers tightly together. Xavier grabbed her wrists, but the alcohol had left him weakened.
His blood felt like it was boiling, stirring a bewildering, intense craving for the soft warmth pressed against his
back.

He turned suddenly, seizing her arms, his scorching breath grazing the side of her neck.

The look in his eyes was blazing; and it made Linda’s scalp prickle.
It was as if he wanted to devour her whole.
“Xavier… what’s wrong with you?”

The man’s complexion was clearly off. Linda could feel that his palms were burning hot, like fire against her skin.
Could it be… the drug was starting to work?
Would such a small dose really be enough?
Linda felt a flicker of panic. Her mother had really come through with this stuff–no holding back.
“What did you put in my drink?”
Xavier’s hand trembled slightly before tightening around Linda’s throat.
Even weakened, his grip was strong enough to make her choke,
She clawed desperately at his wrist. “Nothing… I didn’t do anything… Xavier, what’s happening to you…?”
Looking down at Linda’s flushed, crimson face, the restless fire inside Xavier only burned hotter…
A certain part of him throbbed with an urgent, almost painful need.
Even drunk, he would never normally react this strongly to a woman’s touch.
Shoving her away, Xavier ripped off his jacket and strode toward the bathroom.
Panicked, Linda hurried after him, only to have the door slammed shut and locked right in front of her.
“Xavier!”

She tried the handle–locked. Almost immediately, the violent sound of rushing water echoed from inside.
Xavier clenched his jaw, twisted the faucet all the way to cold, and let the icy stream crash over his head, desperate to drown out the fire raging in his veins.
But that deep, bone–melting, blood–burning heat refused to be tamed…
Damn it.

Meanwhile, Isabella had just pulled up to the hotel.

Seeing her step out of the car, Amelia quickly got out of her own vehicle and walked over.
“Mrs. Moore, you made good time. They just went up a little while ago.”
Isabella had arrived faster than she’d expected.

But then again, women could be contradictory creatures. Even if they didn’t love a man, they often couldn’t stand the thought of another woman taking him.
Linda was like that. And, it seemed, so was Isabella.
Amelia couldn’t help glancing up at the hotel windows. The lights were still on in that room… which meant Linda’s plans probably weren’t going too smoothly.
After the pair had gone upstairs, Amelia had stopped by the front desk. With a little charm and a vague story, she’d managed to get the room number from the clerk.
Linda bringing Xavier to a hotel made her intentions obvious enough.
But trying a move like this on Xavier… the Allen family was really playing with fire.
“Did they go up together?”
Isabella caught the careful wording in Amelia’s reply.
There was a big difference between Xavier being brought here drunk by Linda, and Xavier choosing to come here with her.
But as soon as she asked, Isabella felt a wave of self–disgust. Here she was, still making excuses for him at a time like this.
“Well, I’m not really sure how to-”
“Never mind.”
Amelia didn’t get to finish before Isabella cut her off softly.
She was already here. She’d find out the truth soon enough by going up and seeing for herself.
Earlier, on the phone, Amelia had pinned everything squarely on Linda.
