If not for their completely different personalities, even they themselves–let alone Isabella, who saw them daily- might have struggled to tell who was who.
“Oh no… Did she notice?”
A cold sweat broke over Skyler. He immediately held his breath, widened his eyes innocently, and looked up at Isabella with practiced obedience.
In the end, her suspicion gave way to what she believed must be true. Isabella tucked the blanket snugly around Skyler.
“If you go to sleep like a good boy, I’ll go find Daddy for you. If you stay awake, I won’t.”
Skyler nodded slowly, one small nod after another.
Isabella pressed a soft kiss to his forehead, grabbed a couple of outfits from the closet, and headed out.
But just as she reached the garage, her phone rang–an unknown number.
She answered while sliding into the driver’s seat. “Hello?”
“Mrs. Moore, it’s Amelia.” The voice on the other end was light and sweet.
Isabella paused, then replied, “Actually, I was just about to call you. How’s Xavier doing?”
After Xavier had hung up earlier, she’d tried calling back but couldn’t get through. She didn’t have Amelia’s number saved, so she’d tried Jacob instead. He hadn’t picked up–probably still tied up.
Since she knew the address anyway, Isabella had decided to just drive over and check on him herself.
“Mr. Moore had quite a bit to drink earlier and ended up dropping his phone. I wanted to reach you, but then…. Linda showed up.”
Amelia deliberately lingered on the name.
Isabella fell silent at once, bringing the car to a stop just outside the villa gates.
“Linda’s there too? Did Xavier call her as well?”

Amelia hesitated. “Oh, I really couldn’t say. I only heard him calling for you. Whether he contacted Linda or not… I’m not sure.”
Isabella’s heart sank little by little, like boiling water poured over ice–instantly freezing into sharp, piercing shards.
Hearing the silence on the line, Amelia quickly added, “But I’m a little worried. I saw Linda’s car pull into a hotel

Tearby… She can be pretty assertive, and I didn’t know what to do…”
A hotel?
Isabella’s grip tightened on the steering wheel. “Are you nearby?”

“Linda seemed… off, so I followed her,” Amelia said. “It’s a five–star hotel, just a block from where we had dinner.”
“Send me the address.” After a brief pause, Isabella spoke flatly.
Within moments, the location appeared on her phone.

On the other side of town, Linda had just parked and asked the hotel valet to help carry Xavier up to the suite.
She was a valued guest at this hotel, so she was able to check in after getting settled.
Once Xavier was laid on the bed, Linda made sure to lock the bedroom door.
Her heart was pounding wildly now.
Sitting close beside him, watching the faint flush across his face, Linda felt a desperate, clawing desire rise within
her.
She leaned in, aiming to brush a kiss against his cheek–but right then, he stirred.
Linda jerked upright, turning away as embarrassment heated her face.
“Bella…”
A low, rough murmur escaped his lips.
Linda’s hands went cold. She turned back to see Xavier’s brow furrowed, his lips parting slightly as he kept whispering that name.
That usually composed, detached face now looked almost feverish with longing.
“She doesn’t care about you… Why can’t you let her go?”
Anger surged suddenly in Linda’s chest, sharpening her tone as if she could shake him awake with words alone,
But a moment later, she steadied herself.
Her expression cooled as she pulled out the small vial her mother had given her.
Without delay, she filled a glass with bottled water, stirred in the fine powder, and brought it to Xavier’s side.
“Xavier, sit up and drink some water…”
