“That won’t be necessary. I’m more familiar with this floor than you are. Just point me in the right direction,” Isabella said coldly, brushing past her.

Linda maintained a faint, strained smile. “It’s the second office across from the executive suite.”

Once Isabella was out of earshot, several employees clustered around the water cooler near Linda, their curiosity overriding their fear.

“Linda, who is that? The attitude on her!”

“Right? And what did she mean, ‘more familiar‘? Has she worked here before?”

“So she’s a shareholder, big deal. You’re practically Mrs. Moore. She has no right to talk to you like…”

“That’s enough!” Linda snapped, her voice uncharacteristically sharp.

The small group fell silent, startled. Linda was known for her unflappable, gentle demeanor. This outburst was entirely out of character.

“I’m sorry,” Linda said, regaining her composure with visible effort. “I’m not feeling quite myself today.” She quickly walked away, leaving the others exchanging bewildered looks.

Last night, her mother, Megan Allen, had called in a panic after hearing from their housekeeper, Emma, that a woman claiming to be Mrs. Moore had moved into Xavier’s house. Linda knew instantly it was Isabella. It explained why Xavier had abruptly canceled his meetings yesterday.

To save face, Linda had assured Megan the woman was merely a distant relative of the Moore family and not to concern herself. The lie tasted bitter.

No sooner had Isabella settled at the modest desk in the assigned office than Jacob knocked and entered.

‘Ah… Ms. Carter. Mr. Moore has prepared a different workspace for you. If you’d please follow me.”

Seeing her, Jacob had instinctively almost said “Mrs. Moore“, but he remembered Xavier’s explicit order–in the corporate setting, she was to be addressed only as “Ms. Carter“.

‘This is perfectly adequate. I don’t want to be a bother,” Isabella refused immediately. She highly doubted Xavier’s intentions were

benevolent.

Jacob looked pained. “Mr. Moore was quite clear that this isn’t optional… It’s a direct instruction. He said if you decline the arrangement, your presence here won’t be required.”

sabella was momentarily speechless. “Of course he did. Fine, lead the way.”

She had, however, underestimated Xavier.

Despite being a shareholder, he had arranged for her to be seated in the executive assistants‘ bullpen, directly outside the CEO’s office. The specific workstation was the exact one she had used five years ago.

“Mr. Moore thought you might prefer a familiar setup,” Jacob explained awkwardly. “This station hasn’t been used since you… left. It’s been kept available.”

“I am not Xavier’s personal assistant. This is completely inappropriate!” Isabella retorted, a laugh of sheer frustration catching in her throat.

Before Jacob could formulate a response, she turned on her heel and marched straight into the CEO’s office, intent on a confrontation.

She pushed the door open without knocking. A heavy crystal ashtray sailed through the air, smashing into the doorframe just above her head. Isabella’s knees buckled, and she slid down against the wall in shock.

Glass shards erupted across the floor with a deafening crash.

“Incompetent! I want her found, not excuses! Get out!” Xavier’s roar filled the room. A pale, trembling department head scrambled backward out of the office, remembering to pull the door shut only at the last second.

“Who gave you permission to enter without announcement? Have you forgotten all professional decorum?” Xavier’s voice was now dangerously calm.

Isabella’s earlier defiance evaporated. She swallowed hard and pushed herself up. “Xavier, I am not your EA. I am a shareholder of Moore Group.”

“And?”

He wasn’t even looking at her, standing behind his desk and sifting through a file.

“And, my workspace should reflect that, not-”

“Every placement at Moore Group is at my discretion. That includes shareholders.” He cut her off, dropping the file and striding toward her.
