“But the guy took the money without completing the job, then vanished… None of the top techs at Moore Group have been able to track him down.”
Hearing this, Isabella couldn’t help but let out a laugh.
Who would have thought that someone as sharp as Xavier could get scammed out of his money!
“Ms. Carter, please don’t mention this in front of Mr. Moore…”
Seeing Isabella laugh, Jacob grew even more nervous.
He always felt Isabella was like a different person now.
Before, she had been serious and meticulous in her work, never cracking a smile–let alone laughing at Xavier’s expense!
“Don’t worry, I’m not that careless,” Isabella replied coolly before heading straight to the garage.
Once in the car, Isabella instinctively leaned over to fasten Xavier’s seatbelt. It was a smooth, practiced motion–until she realized he was watching her with a knowing, penetrating look.
She caught herself immediately, thinking how foolish that had been.
But just as she began to pull back, Xavier suddenly grabbed her wrist. “Why aren’t you wearing the ring?”
“I left it at my desk,” Isabella said pointedly. “I’m not used to wearing… costume jewelry.”
“Costume jewelry?” Xavier repeated through gritted teeth, so annoyed he almost laughed. “Do you have any idea what that ring is worth? How dare you call it cheap?”
Sensing his anger, Isabella quickly softened her tone. “What could it possibly be worth? It’s nothing special. Not even as big as the smallest diamond my ex ever gave me.”
“You-!”
A vein throbbed at Xavier’s temple. He yanked her sharply toward him.
Isabella winced at the pain in her wrist–he was practically crushing it.
But then, just as suddenly, he released her. He leaned forward slightly, his face paling noticeably.
“What’s wrong? Are you okay?”
Seeing the fine sweat on his forehead, Isabella asked, her voice edged with concern despite herself.
“None of your business.”
Xavier shot her a sidelong glance and turned away.
Who did he think he was snapping at? She wasn’t even going to bother with his nonsense.
Isabella took a steadying breath and reached into the car’s familiar storage spot, pulling out a pair of flat ballet–style shoes and

But after doing so, she paused, struck by a sudden realization–five years had passed. Xavier had changed cars, so why were there still women’s shoes inside, and not just any shoes, but her preferred brand and style?
A moment later, she brushed the thought aside, feeling almost ridiculous.
What was there to wonder about?
Didn’t it just prove that Linda had been with him all this time?
The rest of the ride passed in silence. Xavier kept his eyes closed, resting. Isabella turned on the classical piano playlist he often listened to. The atmosphere was quiet, yet strangely harmonious.
Outside the window, towering skyscrapers blurred past, giving her the surreal feeling of having stepped back in time.
This was almost exactly like the routine they’d kept during the three years she’d worked as his executive assistant.
Soon they arrived at an upscale private dining establishment.
After parking, Xavier didn’t wait for her, walking inside ahead.
Isabella followed, carrying his suit jacket and briefcase–every bit the impeccable professional aide.
When she entered the private dining room, she saw a well–dressed middle–aged couple and a young woman, all greeting Xavier with warm enthusiasm.
She recognized them immediately–Malcolm Fairchild and Claudia Fairchild, power players in the domestic film industry.
