“Linda, after tonight, Isabetta already doesn’t trust me. And with Mr. Moore honestly, I still don’t know how to handle things.”
Amelia knew exactly what Linda was after.
She wanted her help to drive a wedge between Xavier and Isabella.
But after seeing how much Xavier valued Isabella earlier that evening, Amelia realized she’d stepped into a messy
situation.
“Five million.”
Linda cut straight to the point.
Amelia fell silent. A slight smile touched Linda’s lips–this was promising.
“So what if you’re Xavier’s executive assistant? At the end of the day, you’re still on his payroll. But if I became Mrs. Moore… I could make sure your talents really get put to use.”
Linda’s words hit exactly where Amelia cared most.
They spoke for over an hour before Linda finally hung up and headed back toward the house.
She hadn’t dared to make the call indoors. Instead, she’d stood outside in the chilly wind the whole time, her fingers numb by the end.
The moment Linda pushed the front door open, Megan heard her and hurried downstairs.
“How did it go?”
But seeing Linda’s pale face, the hope in Megan’s eyes quickly faded into worry.
Linda couldn’t bring herself to meet her mother’s gaze. She just shook her head, biting down on her lower lip as if holding back tears.
“Come on, let’s go up to your room.”
Megan quickly took Linda’s hand, but the iciness of her daughter’s fingers made her heart sink.
“You’re freezing–how long were you out there?”
Linda didn’t answer. Only after they reached her bedroom, with the heater turned on and a thick blanket wrapped around her shoulders, did she slowly start explaining.
It was humiliating, after all.

Chapter 156 Running Away
She had thrown herself at Xavier and come away with nothing but shame.
And Xavier had been furious tamght. The Allen family would likely pay for it.
If Ray found out, Linda would probably be disowned–or worse.
Megan’s expression darkened as she listened.

Seeing her mother so quiet, Linda grew even more anxious, “Mom, if Xavier decides to come after our family… what will Dad do?”
Megan studied Linda’s face for a long moment, then stood up abruptly.
Linda didn’t understand–until she watched her mother pull a suitcase from the closet and begin packing clothes into it.
“Mom… are you kicking me out?”
“Come help me pack. Quickly.”
Ignoring Linda’s stunned look, Megan moved with purpose.
Linda grabbed her mother’s arm. “Mom, I was wrong! I shouldn’t have been so reckless and dragged you and Dad into this… but please, don’t make me leave now-
“I’m not abandoning you.”
Megan sighed, cupping Linda’s face gently and wiping her tears away.
“Your father loves you, but he cares more about the company and the family name than anything else.
“If he finds out what you did, he’d rather cut you off than let this slide. So you need to go now. No matter what happens, I’ll take the heat here.”
Her words were quiet but firm.
Once she finished, Megan pulled out a set of car keys, a property deed, and several of her personal bank cards- things she’d prepared in advance.
“I bought you a new car last week from the dealership downtown. If you take one of the family cars, your father will track it.
“This condo was part of my inheritance. It’s over in Harborview–a bit of a drive, but it’s fully renovated. Plenty of space for you to stay on your own.
“And the money here is what I’ve saved over the years. It’s not a fortune, but between checking and savings, it’s over ten million.
“Take it all. Even if the Allen family falls apart, you’ll be taken care of.”

She wasn’t scolding Linda. From the moment she’d let her daughter go out that night, Megan had already braced for something like this-
Even if everything crumbled, as long as Linda was safe and free, she could accept it.
“Mom… I can’t just leave. What about you?”
Tears welled in Linda’s eyes. She hadn’t expected her mother’s plan to be this.
She buried her face in Megan’s shoulder, guilt washing over her in waves.
“Oh, honey,” Megan sighed, holding her close. “I’ll be fine–I still have your father. But you… you don’t have anyone reliable by your side right now.
“Besides, who knows what’s going to happen with the family business.
“Your father’s been so stressed lately, even with me. If you leave now, he’ll blame himself. Maybe he’ll soften… treat me a little better because of it.”
Megan spoke gently, trying to lift her daughter’s spirits.
“As long as you’re happy, I’m happy. I’ll always be behind you, no matter what you choose to do.”
Linda couldn’t find the words. She just nodded, over and over.
She had sacrificed too much for Xavier already. There was/no turning back now.
They spent the rest of the night packing. Before sunrise, Megan drove her daughter to the condo herself and stayed to help unpack. By the time they finished, dawn was already breaking over the city.
The condo Megan had passed down was spacious–the largest layout in the upscale Harborview complex.
She’d kept a cleaning service maintaining it regularly over the years, so after airing out the bedding and a quick tidy–up, the place already felt like home.
