“I arranged a housekeeper for you. From now on, if you need anything, just het her know, and she’ll relay it to me. That way your father won’t catch on.”
Before leaving, Megan made sure to remind Linda one more time.-
Linda hugged her mother tightly. She’d never really lived on her own before–even during her years studying abroad, her mom had always been there. The thought of being apart now tugged at her heart.
Once her mother was gone, Linda wandered back into the living room alone. The spacious layout felt liberating, yet undeniably empty.
Her phone buzzed against the coffee table. A familiar number flashed across the screen.
She stared at it for a long moment, then quietly declined the call.
Over the past few days, Quill had tried reaching her more times than she could count, but she never picked up.
Let him help her deal with Xavier? She’d rather handle things herself.

Early the next morning, Isabella’s phone kept vibrating on the nightstand.
The same number had already called several times.
Finally, a small hand reached over and picked it up.
Skyler glanced at the screen, then toward the bathroom door.
Isabella was in the shower. The caller ID showed a name he remembered all too well. “Sander.”
The same shady guy who’d tried to sweet–talk Jason and hit on his mom that night.
Skyler paused, thinking it over, then carefully carried the phone out of the bedroom.
He’d fallen asleep on the living room sofa with the housekeepers last night, waiting up for his mom. By the time he woke, she was already awake and showering.
She usually showered at night. If she was doing it in the morning, it meant she must’ve come home really late- was completely worn out.
Out in the dining area, the housekeepers were setting the table for breakfast.
“Is that Mrs. Moore’s phone, sweetie?”
One of them noticed Skyler holding the buzzing device and leaned in curiously.

Skyler nodded quickly and hurried toward Xavier’s study on short, brisk steps.

“Looking for Mr. Moore? He seemed really exhausted last night. Your mom said to let him sleep in,” another housekeeper said gently, scooping him up before he could reach the door.
“Mmph-” Skyler squirmed, not wanting to let go of the phone, but then it was lifted right out of his grip by someone else.
“What’s going on here?”
Xavier’s cool, steady voice came from above him.
The little boy went still immediately. He looked up at Xavier and pointed firmly at the phone now in the man’s hand.
His eyes were wide and pleading.
Answer it. Make that creep stop trying to get to Mom.
Just then, the buzzing in Xavier’s palm stopped.
“Mr. Moore, did we wake you?” The housekeeper who’d picked Skyler up flinched, quickly shifting the boy behind her. “So sorry for the disturbance.”
Another approached. “Mr. Moore, I can take Mrs. Moore’s phone to her once she’s out.”
Skyler’s face fell with obvious disappointment. He dropped his gaze to the floor.
“You handed me the phone on purpose, didn’t you?”
Xavier’s voice came again, lower and closer now. He’d crouched down to Skyler’s eye level, his penetrating gaze fixed on the boy’s face.
“You wanted me to answer your mom’s call?”
Xavier studied the kid’s stubborn expression–the set of his nose, the intensity in his eyes–and felt something shift inside his chest.
This kid was sharp. How did someone as straight–laced as Isabella raise a little schemer like this? “Hmph.” Skyler didn’t look the least bit friendly. He puffed his cheeks out at Xavier, face flushing slightly.
After a brief standoff, he finally nodded.
It wasn’t like he was doing Xavier a favor, anyway.
He just wanted someone else to deal with the problem. Wasn’t that obvious?
If his dad couldn’t even keep his own wife from getting pestered by other guys, that would be embarrassing

Looks like you and Sander don’t get along.”
Xavier had seen the catter’s name the moment he took the phone.
Ever since Isabella returned with this boy in tow, he hadn’t asked a single question about Sander.
He hadn’t asked Jacob to dig into whether the kid was related to him, either.
Somehow, he just knew–this little guy had nothing to do with Sander.
