Stanley let out a low, dry chuckle. His voice, raspy with age, cut through the air like sandpaper, stifling Teresa’s faltering words.
“Sentiment has never had a place in this family. I raised Xavier myself. I know him better than you ever will.”
His eyes locked onto hers. “I’ll only say this once. Put the gun down.”
Stanley stepped squarely in front of Wilson. Even with the barrel pointed at his forehead, Wilson showed no trace of fear-only a colder, sharper disdain.
‘Don’t waste your concern on me, Mr. Moore,” Wilson replied icily. “Whether live or die doesn’t matter.”
‘Dad, please… just let them go,” Teresa pleaded, her grip on the cold steel of the pistol so tight her hands shook. “From now on, do whatever you ask…”
This was the first time in her life she had ever openly defied Stanley.
Years ago, when she lost the person she loved most, she had hidden away alone, nursing her grief in silence…
‘Teresa…” Isabella’s weak voice broke through. “Don’t worry about me… please… take the baby and go…”
Gritting her teeth, Isabella pushed herself up, cradling her injured arm. Every breath sent a fresh wave of pain through her body.
Seeing his mother like that, Skyler felt his heart clench. He bit down hard to keep from crying out, but his eyes glistened. Quickly, he wiped the tears away.
Then, as if he’d made up his mind, the moment Isabella finished speaking, he darted toward her.
Stanley’s bodyguards moved to intercept, but Skyler was faster than they expected.
‘Jason, no-!”
sabella’s cry of terror was too late. Skyler was already rushing forward.

n that split second, Wilson seized his chance. Teresa’s attention had shifted. He grabbed her arm, twisted the gun from her grasp, and without a moment’s hesitation, aimed at Skyler’s back and fired.
‘Bang-”
The gunshot echoed through the room.
sabella’s heart nearly stopped.
She lunged forward, arms outstretched toward her son, but she knew she wouldn’t make it in time.
3od, if I’ve done something wrong, punish me-but not him. Not a child.
Just as everyone stood frozen, a figure moved even faster than the bullet, wrapping himself around Skyler from behind.
They hit the floor with a heavy thud.
The bullet grazed the man’s collarbone, tearing through his tailored suit and leaving a dark, bleeding gash.

“Xavier!”
Stanley was the first to snap out of the shock. The others followed, voices rising in alarm.
“Xavier!”
Tears streamed down Isabella’s face. She covered her mouth, unable to believe what she was seeing.
Xavier’s tall frame had collapsed right in front of her.
He’d taken the hit but shielded Skyler completely. The impact drove him to his knees mere steps from where Isabella stood.
Almost immediately, the room flooded with people.
Jacob burst in with a team of Xavier’s security detail. His face paled at the scene, and he rushed to Xavier’s side.
“Mr. Moore!”
Isabella hurried over as well, her heart torn between anguish for Xavier and terror for her son.
Xavier had actually taken a bullet for her child.
If she hadn’t seen it with her own eyes, she would have thought it impossible.
Xavier was in too much pain to speak. When he saw Isabella approach, he loosened his hold on Skyler and asked hoarsely, “Are you… both alright?”
Skyler, just five years old, had been brave until now. But faced with the sight of blood soaking through Xavier’s shirt, his eyes welled up. He stood frozen, trembling.
“Xavier, you-”
Isabella reached for him, wanting to check the wound, but Xavier seemed to think she was reaching for the boy. Gently, he passed Skyler over to her.
Isabella hesitated only a second before gathering her son tightly in her arms
“It’s okay, baby, it’s okay…”
She whispered the words into Skyler’s hair, but her eyes never left Xavier.
Jacob helped Xavier to his feet. Xavier clenched his jaw, breathing heavily. Jacob grabbed a stack of napkins from a side table and pressed them hard against the wound, but blood seeped through almost instantly.
“Somebody call an ambulance-now!”
