Chapter 17 A Husband’s Declaration
Were they talking about her when they mentioned that capable woman from before?
Isabella nearly laughed out loud.
Seeing Vanessa lose her poise, Malcolm and Claudia quickly intervened. “Vanessa, mind your manners!”
“Ms. Fairchild, actually, I’m not…”
“She’s not my assistant.”
Before Isabella could finish, Xavier stated coolly.

“Not an assistant?” Vanessa faltered, then looked even more dismissive. “Even if you’re just a Moore Group employee, you’re hardly in a position to join us at this table, are you?”
Among the women who had ever accompanied Xavier, Vanessa only really remembered one named Linda. She’d always considered her a formidable obstacle. So who was this new person?
“Allow me to introduce myself properly. I’m a shareholder in Moore Group. And to be honest, if Mr. Moore hadn’t specifically insisted I come along today to join you all, I likely wouldn’t be here.”
Isabella’s voice was soft, and she offered Xavier a slight, knowing smile at the corner of her mouth.
Xavier’s expression remained icy, his gaze chilling as it settled on her. This woman certainly knew how to elevate her own standing.
The family of three exchanged looks of surprise. To be a shareholder of Moore Group at her age, and personally brought here by Xavier… This woman clearly had significant connections.
Malcolm and Claudia promptly stood to shake Isabella’s hand, making polite conversation.
Only Vanessa’s expression grew darker. “A few shares don’t make you special,” she muttered under her breath.
Malcolm and Claudia shot her a warning look before signaling the server to pour the wine. They then raised their glasses to Isabella, trying to smooth over the awkwardness.
As they clinked glasses, they noticed the brilliant diamond ring on Isabella’s finger. “Ms. Carter, you have excellent taste. That’s quite an impressive ring,” Claudia remarked.
Hearing this, Xavier’s eyes shifted to Isabella, his gaze deepening. She’d clearly said in the car she wasn’t wearing it… She lied without batting an eye.
“Really?” Isabella glanced at Xavier, her smile widening. “Mr. Moore gave it to me.”
Xavier’s frosty demeanor met her amused eyes. As soon as the words left her mouth, the atmosphere plunged into a stiff silence.
Malcolm and Claudia looked profoundly uncomfortable. Vanessa even shot to her feet. “What are you talking about? Xavier would never give you a ring! You’re nothing to him!”
“I’ve been wondering the same thing,” Isabella continued, deliberately playful. “Isn’t a diamond ring typically a proposal? Perhaps Mr. Moore is just… generous with his gifts, which explains why so many women admire him.” With that, she’d managed to slight Xavier while simultaneously mocking Vanessa.

Vanessa turned to him, her voice trembling. “Xavier, is it true? Did you give her that ring?”
Xavier’s unblinking stare remained fixed on Isabella, a cold intensity in his eyes that felt bone–chilling.
After a long moment, he replied, “Yes.”

“Why?” Vanessa’s eyes instantly welled up. She had poured financial resources and effort into winning his favor, yet struggled just to secure a dinner invitation–let alone receive a gift.
Isabella also tilted her head, studying Xavier’s face. Confronted with a choice between an easy escape and upholding his own principles, she was genuinely curious what he would say.
“Because she’s my wife.”
Xavier stated it flatly, without a hint of hesitation.
Isabella’s heart gave a faint stir. She hadn’t expected him to acknowledge it so directly.
The silence in the room became absolute.
Malcolm and Claudia were stunned, their mouths slightly agape.
Vanessa stood frozen for a second before tears began to streak down her cheeks. Even though he had married someone else, he showed not the slightest reluctance or attempt to conceal it right in front of her… It felt like her sincere feelings were being trampled, a personal humiliation.
Her face flushed crimson. She snatched up her handbag and fled the room.
With Vanessa gone, Malcolm and Claudia rose as well. “Mr. Moore, you know how our daughter feels. Even if you don’t return her affections, this was unnecessarily cruel.”
Xavier didn’t move from his seat. “From the very start of our business relationship, I have been married. I made it clear to Ms. Fairchild that our interaction was strictly professional.”
“You…”
Malcolm was too furious to continue. Claudia, still seething, added, “And yet you had the nerve to accept such favorable terms from our family all these years?”
“I’m a businessman,” Xavier replied, his voice cold and edged with arrogance. “If a partnership is profitable, I see no reason to
decline.”
