Chapter 172 Waiting at the Hospital

Xavier had once asked her what she kept whispering into his ear.

Isabella explained that she was trying to soothe his pain, hoping it might ease his suffering… maybe then it wouldn’t haunt him

anymore.

Back then, Xavier hadn’t responded, and Isabella assumed he thought she was just being theatrical-or that it was some silly sentimental gesture.

But deep down, she knew the truth: she was helplessly, completely in love with him.

Loving someone like that was its owh kind of foolishness.

Even if it was pointless, even if people laughed at her for chasing after something that would only burn her.

“Okay,” Isabella agreed softly.

When she reached out, her hand hesitated above his injury, not quite touching it.

“It won’t hurt for long… soon the pain will fade… stop hurting him… I’ll blow it away for you… if someone has to feel pain, let it be me… I don’t mind hurting… let me take his place…”

Her whispers were quiet, trembling slightly.

The words were mumbled, almost incoherent, but this time Xavier heard every one.

When she wasn’t trying to argue with him, this woman was genuinely endearing.

And strangely, her illogical little pain-soothing chant seemed to work. Within moments, Xavier felt the sharp ache begin to dull.

“Thank you.”

The two low words brushed against her ear.

Isabella’s heart tightened. This man, usually so proud, so infuriating she sometimes wished he’d just disappear…

Now, every labored breath he took made her chest ache.

Xavier’s pulse felt faint. He seemed to be drifting, his strength slipping away rapidly.

Panic rose in Isabella. “Jacob, can’t you go any faster?”

“I’m trying!” Jacob was just as worried. He caught her eye in the rearview mirror, holding back words he didn’t dare speak.

The hospital was probably in chaos by now too.

More than ten minutes later, Xavier was finally wheeled into the emergency OR.

Isabella waited anxiously outside, but there was no sign of Harry.

Chapter 172 Waiting at the Hospital

“Why hasn’t Dr. Ashford arrived yet?”

She tried calling Harry, but he didn’t pick up.

Harry was one of the top surgeons and hematologists in the country. Right now, he was the one she trusted most with Xavier’s care.

If he were here, she could get updates faster.

Isabella thought about going to Harry’s office to find him, but Jacob stopped her.

“Mrs. Moore, you should really have your arm checked first. If Mr. Moore finds out you didn’t, he’ll have my head.”

“It’s fine,” Isabella insisted, brushing off her own injury.

Desperate, Jacob finally admitted, “Dr. Ashford is… tied up at the moment. You need to take care of yourself first.”

“How do you know he’s tied up?”

Isabella froze for a second, then it hit her. Xavier and Jacob had bolted over to Moore Manor in a total hurry-there was no way they could’ve predicted Xavier would end up needing to be hospitalized.

So how in the world did Jacob know what was going on with Harry? On top of that, if he’d really been thinking about Xavier, Jacob should’ve reached out to Harry the second he stepped foot in the hospital, right?

Whoever Harry was dropping everything to help had to be someone connected to Xavier-there was no other explanation.

A sick feeling settled in the pit of Isabella’s stomach. When she shot that question at him, Jacob stumbled over his words, completely lost for what to say next.

“I-I just guessed,” he mumbled, his voice trailing off.

“Jacob, did something happen to Noah?” Isabella cut to the chase, her voice sharp with worry.

Jacob hesitated, just for a split second, before saying, “No…”

But that split second was all Isabella needed.

Without waiting for more, she turned and headed straight for Noah’s room.

“Mrs. Moore!” Jacob called after her, but a glance at the glowing red “SURGERY” sign kept him rooted in place.

When Isabella reached Noah’s room, it was empty.

A caregiver was inside, stripping the bed. Isabella stepped forward. “Excuse me-where’s Noah?”

“And you are?” the woman asked cautiously.

“Family.”

“Family? Where were you all this time? Mr. Noah Moore, he…” The caregiver’s expression turned pitying.

“What happened to him?” Isabella’s voice tightened.
