Chapter 178 Having a Talk
Chapter 178 Having a Talk
Harry stood off to the side, suddenly feeling like a third wheel.
He’d originally come to update Xavier on Noah’s condition…
But Xavier seemed so wrapped up in the moment that he’d completely pushed Noah to the back of his mind.
“I’ll leave you two alone, then,” Harry said, turning to go.
Xavier stopped him before he reached the door.
“How is Noah?”

Isabella had been about to gently refuse the spoon Xavier was holding out, but hearing his question, she quietly accepted the bite instead.
She’d expected Xavier to ask about Noah the moment he woke up-especially with Harry right there.
But the man had been surprisingly calm, almost as if it hadn’t crossed his mind.
Now, though, Isabella noticed his hand trembled ever so slightly as he lifted another spoonful toward her.
It wasn’t that he didn’t care, or that he’d forgotten-he was probably afraid to hear the answer.
Suddenly, she felt she understood what was going through his mind.
“Noah’s out of the woods,” Harry replied evenly. “That’s actually what I came to tell you. Last night was touch and go, but he pulled through.”
He paused, then added, “He woke up a little while ago. You can visit him later if you’d like.”
Xavier didn’t say anything in return, but Isabella watched as his hand-which had stilled briefly-steadied itself and brought another spoon to her lips.
After a long moment, he let out a quiet, “Mm.”
His eyes stayed fixed on the nearly empty bowl of oatmeal. His expression hardly changed, but Isabella caught the faintest flicker of relief in his gaze.
A quiet sense of gratitude washed over her-thank God she’d made it into the OR in time.
After breakfast, Isabella and Xavier headed to Noah’s room.
Harry filled Xavier in on everything that had happened the day before, leaving out only Isabella’s direct involvement.
As for Rachel, they still hadn’t been able to reach her.
Harry chose his words carefully, not wanting to hit Xavier too hard with the truth, but it was clear enough: what happened to Noah was tied to that woman.
Inside the room, several nurses were tending to Noah. He’d been put on an IV earlier that morning, and his stomach wasn’t handling it well-for now, he was limited to clear liquids.

Even so, Noah tooked utterly drained, far worse than before.
Xavier only glanced at him from the doorway before turning and walking back down the hall.
Once Xavier was gone, Isabella stepped inside alone.

Noah noticed her entrance and motioned weakly to the nurse helping him drink, turning his head slightly in Isabella’s direction.
The corners of his mouth lifted just a bit. His face was pale with exhaustion, but he was clearly trying to greet her. Isabella hurried to his bedside. “Just rest-don’t try to move.”
“It’s not that bad… but you… what happened to your arm?”
Noah’s voice was thin, each word slow and weighed down with fatigue.
Isabella didn’t answer directly. Instead, she helped the nurse replace his IV bag.
Once the caregivers had left and they were alone, she took a seat beside the bed and quietly recounted the events of the previous day.
Noah didn’t seem surprised by the Moore family’s actions, but his eyes lit up with interest when she mentioned her child.
Five years ago, Noah had saved that child’s life.
Not just one life-three.
When Noah brought up her kids, a trace of warmth finally softened his worn-out expression.
“So you came back because of the little one. Have you told Xavier/about the other two?”
Isabella shook her head. “One is already more than enough to handle.”
Even if Xavier had a habit of stepping in, one child was probably his limit. If he found out she had two more…
Just the thought made her cringe inwardly.
It was another reminder that she and Xavier were only temporary-a short-term arrangement, nothing more.
Catching the awkward look on Isabella’s face, Noah let out a silent, knowing smile.
Isabella noticed immediately and felt a flutter of self-consciousness. “What’s so funny?”
“Just that someone seems… different lately.”

When Noah had seen her before, Isabella was entirely focused on getting a divorce-her mind made up, her resolve clear.
Now, though, whenever Xavier came up, her words carried emotions she couldn’t quite hide and thoughts she hadn’t sorted through.
“Do I seem… different?”
The moment she said it, Isabella realized Noah hadn’t actually pointed the finger at her.
She’d basically admitted it herself.
