Chapter 179 Protecting Noah_
Chapter 179 Protecting Noah
“If I really mattered to him, he would have been here yesterday.”
Noah withdrew his arm, a faint, mocking smile touching his lips.
“You should go. And honestly, it’s better if you don’t come back. Wasting your time on me… It’s pointless.”
Isabella studied him. He seemed not just weaker than she remembered, but thinner, more fragile.

“That was different,” she said, her voice softening. “When Xavier found out how critical you were, he was more worried than anyone. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have spent all these years so driven to find a treatment.”
Getting hacked, getting swindled by Rachel…
Xavier wasn’t one to just throw money around carelessly.
But she didn’t want to press the point and add to whatever was weighing Noah down.
“Some people save others because they want to help. Others do it because they’re afraid of losing someone to take their frustrations out on.”
Noah let out a low, humorless chuckle, the words hanging with unspoken weight.
Isabella looked at him, confused. “Did you and Xavier… have some kind of argument?”
Her puzzled expression actually made him smile briefly.
He reached over and gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
The sunlight caught in her hair, giving it a soft shine-it reminded him of someone, just for a moment.
“We fought when we were kids,” Noah said, his voice low and rough, faint with exhaustion.
The smile still lingered at the corner of his mouth, but his eyes held something heavier, something sad.
“Xavier was never any good at arguing… but out of everyone in the Moore family, he’s the only one who ever really treated you like family.”
Isabella found herself defending Xavier almost without thinking.
Noah watched her, a quiet amusement in his gaze, but he didn’t respond to what she’d said.
“It would’ve been better if you hadn’t come back,” he murmured. “Then everything could have just… run its course. It would’ve been a relief-for me, and probably for Xavier too.”
He sighed, the sound strained and uneven, before turning his head toward the window.
Isabella didn’t fully grasp the depth of what he meant.
All she felt was that in just five years, the illness had drained away the vitality he once had.
“I haven’t tracked down all the medications yet, but don’t worry-I’ll find a way to make you
better.”

Chapter 179 Protecting Noah
“People who bring trouble wherever they go… they can live a long time afid still never find any real peace.”
Isabella was trying to encourage him, but Noah’s reply sounded more like a thought spoken aloud to himself.
His voice was so quiet she almost missed it.
She didn’t know how to comfort him, how to lift his spirits.
From the first time she’d seen him after returning until now…
Noah had been complying with treatment, yes, but in truth, he had no real will to keep going.
If things continued like this, his body would give out long before any treatment could take effect.
“What about that person you were waiting for?” she asked suddenly, remembering. “Did she ever come back?”
Five years ago, Noah had still held onto life fiercely.

Even on his worst days, he’d kept his composure, his dry sense of humor. And while he didn’t have Xavier’s kind of striking, instant presence, Noah was handsome in his own way-gentle, refined, the kind of guy nurses often noticed.
Isabella used to tease him about finally picking one and settling down.
But he’d always say his heart belonged to someone else, and when she came back, he’d tell her how he felt.
Back then, Isabella hadn’t taken it too seriously-she figured he was just making it up.
But now, looking back, no matter how sick he was, Noah had been hopeful during his clear moments.
He’d wanted to live.
Noah didn’t answer. He closed his eyes and let sleep pull him under.
Not answering was answer enough.
There was something else Isabella wanted to ask, but she hadn’t found the right moment.
Back then, Noah had known Linda was the one who harmed him. So why had he protected her?
Linda had returned five years ago.
She’d grown up with Xavier, so of course she’d known Noah for years too…
Come to think of it, around the time Linda came back, Noah had been at his most motivated to follow his treatment plan.
Maybe she didn’t need to ask that question after all.
Isabella left Noah’s room, planning to head home first. After everything that had happened last night, she was worried about the
little one.
But as she stepped into the hallway, a tall figure blocked her path.
