Their embrace seemed to stretch on forever–until Isabella’s phone buzzed in her pocket, pulling her abruptly back to reality.
She drew away quickly, but Xavier was already reaching for her phone.
“Xavier!”
Isabella tried to snatch it back, but he made no effort to stop her. By the time her fingers closed around it, the screen was dark.
He’d ended the call without even glancing at who it was.
“What was that for?”
“Weren’t you here to look after me? I haven’t finished eating, and I still need my

medicine.”
“But someone was calling me,” she said, frustration creeping into her voice. It wasn’t as if she’d planned the interruption.
“Get out.”
Suddenly, his voice turned cold–sharp enough to send a shiver down her spine.
How could his mood shift so fast?
One moment he was tender enough to make her doubt her own resolve, the next he was acting like she’d done something unforgivable.
“Xavier, do you have any idea how rude you’re being right now?”
Isabella was so upset she could hardly form the words.
She’d brought him dinner, picked up his prescription, spent the whole evening being patient and kind–practically babying him.
And for what? Total ingratitude.
“I’m the rude one. I’m sure Sander’s perfectly polite.”
Isabella didn’t have many close contacts. At this hour, it could really only be one person.
With that one comment, everything clicked into place–he assumed it was Sander calling.
“When did I ever say-” she began, then stopped. Of course. He thought she was here because of Sander.
“He’s worried about you, and you’re protecting him. If you two care that much, why put on this act with me?”
Isabella opened her mouth to explain, but Xavier let out a short, cold laugh.
It was just a sound, barely a word, but it stripped away every bit of warmth between them.
Her genuine care….he called it an act.

-She tried to speak again, but something heavy and sharp seemed lodged in her chest. It actually hurt.
“If you’re doing this for Sander, Save your effort. I’m not letting the Whitmans off the hook.”
After a tense silence, Xavier spoke again, his voice low and detached

His face was partly shadowed, his expression unreadable. He sounded distant, as though her explanations were irrelevant.
Suddenly, Isabella felt foolish. The only person she’d been worried about all night was him.
“Sander is polite to me,” she said quietly, pressing her lips together. “At least he’s emotionally steady. And he doesn’t make everything about himself.” (1)
With that, she turned toward the door.
“Crash-”
Before she could take two steps, something shattered behind her.
A rush of air brushed past her leg. The bottle of anti–inflammatory pills she’d brought for him hit the floor near her feet and burst
open.
Tablets scattered across the hardwood.
Isabella didn’t look down. She stepped right over the mess and walked out.
But once the door closed behind her, her eyes stung.
She took a slow, shaky breath, willing herself to keep it together.
All that talk about a fresh start, about trusting her unconditionally, about having feelings for her–empty words.
How could she have let herself believe him, even for a second?
Pushing the emotions down, Isabella hurried back to her room.
Skyler wasn’t asleep–he was under the covers, quietly texting Jason on his phone.
Jason had left his own phone at the therapy center last time, so Skyler had lent him one of his.
When the specialists had come for the follow–up, they’d returned Jason’s device.
Now the two boys could message whenever they wanted–though Jason wasn’t much of a texter.
Before Jason could even reply to one of Skyler’s notes, Hannah would have already sent ten.
“Please, I’m begging you, just come home…”
“That Xavier guy is bad news. Just because he hasn’t hurt you yet doesn’t mean you’re safe. You’re literally in a dangerous situation right now.”
“Is pretending to be Jason even fun? You barely say one word a day. Aren’t you bored?”
“You little rascal, are you done with this yet?”

4’m serious–switch back. Now. Immediately.”
Hannah’s texts shifted from pleading to exasperated. She was clearly reaching her limit.
Skyler stared at the screen, his small brow furrowed.
Good thing he hadn’t mentioned anything about Daddy’s family coming after him and Mom. Otherwise, his inbox would be completely flooded.
“Yeah yeah okay. Talk later,” he typed quickly.
Mom had gone straight to the bathroom when she came in. The water had run for only a minute or two before stopping abruptly.
Skyler could tell something was off.
He ended the chat and temporarily muted both Hannah’s and Jason’s numbers.
Pressing his ear gently to the bathroom door, Skyler listened. Everything
He was about to knock when the door opened.
Isabella looked surprised to see him waiting there.
“Hey sweetie, you’re awake? Did you get enough rest?”
was quiet inside.
She knelt down, gently brushing his hair with her uninjured hand, her voice soft.
