Skyler loaded up a saved game file.
An opponent’s high score was already displayed on the screen, a number so high it looked almost unbeatable. Skyler glanced at Isabella, and she understood–their mission was to top it.
Seeing the determined look in his eyes, Isabella felt her own competitive spirit kick in.
She didn’t play often, but when she was younger, her sister Hannah had been obsessed with gaming, so Isabella had spent plenty of time helping her grind through levels. And lately, with her son being such a fan, she’d picked up more than a few tips just from watching him.

She thought they were just a mom–and–son team taking on a tough score, but in reality, they were up against what was basically a legendary run.

Skyler nodded, deeply encouraged.

“We’re getting closer! One more try,”
“Let’s go again!”
“We’ve got this round for sure.”
“Almost there–just a little steadier next time.”
And so they kept going, playing from afternoon straight into evening.
Somewhere along the way, Isabella got completely absorbed, and they ended up sharing a cup of instant ramen and a whole

Each time they inched closer to beating the score, they’d fall just a little short.

Finally, Isabella set down the controller, exhausted, and sank back into the couch cushions. “Alright, I’m calling it. Let’s pick this up another day.
