Chapter 188 Facing the Evaluation
Isabella glanced at the little boy and noticed his expression had turned sullen, his whole demeanor deflated.
“What’s the matter? Upset you got beaten by a girl?”
She couldn’t help but feel amused.
Skyler just crossed his arms and turned his back to her, clearly hitting a nerve.

Isabella was about to say something more when a knock came at the door, followed by the housekeeper’s voice from the hallway.
“Mrs. Moore, the specialist team for Jason has arrived.”
Hearing that, Isabella responded quickly, “Alright, we’ll be right down.”
The two had spent the entire afternoon gaming in the room and were still in their casual clothes. She hurried Skyler along to change and wash up before heading downstairs.
But on their way to the living room, Skyler dragged his feet, pulling gently on Isabella’s sleeve and stopping just outside the doorway.

“What’s wrong, sweetie?” Isabella could tell he was holding back. She bent down and smoothed his hair. “Feeling uneasy about meeting new people?”
Skyler shook his head.
In his mind, Mommy was only putting up with staying in Daddy’s house because of Jason–or rather, because of him. The thought made him want to have nothing to do with these so–called specialists.
Isabella tried to gently coax him for a few moments, but the little boy just stood there with his head down, unwilling to budge. Seeing his downcast face, she didn’t have the heart to push him./
Before she could try again, the housekeeper reappeared. “Mrs. Moore, they’re ready. Everyone’s waiting for Jason.”
“We’ll be there in a moment,” Isabella replied, then turned back to Skyler. “Jason, honey, it won’t take long. Let’s just go listen to what the doctors have to say, okay?”
“Jason. Come here.”
A deep voice cut through from behind Isabella. She straightened up just as Xavier stepped past her, his demeanor cool and detached. He reached for Skyler, but the boy dodged and tried to hide behind Isabella instead.
For a brief moment, Xavier and Isabella stood face–to–face. Their eyes met before each looked away, tension hanging in the air.
“You’re making him late for a specialist appointment. Is this how you raise a child?”
Xavier’s tone was icy.
“How I raise my son is none of your concern,” Isabella shot back, a bitter smile touching her lips. “You set this up without consulting me. We can always cancel if now isn’t a good time.”
She moved to take Skyler’s hand and leave, but Xavier was quicker–he scooped the boy up by his waist, lifting him effortlessly into

Skyler immediately began to squirm, whining and stretching his hands toward Isabella.
“Xavier, if you’re upset, take it out on me. There’s no need to manhandle a child,” Isabella said, reaching for Skyler again.
Xavier shifted away, his gaze cold. “A child who’s coddled too much rarely learns discipline.”
“Who’s coddling him?” Isabella retorted, though part of her knew there was some truth to his words.
She did tend to be softer on Jason—or in this case, Skyler pretending to be Jason–compared to her other two children. A therapist had once mentioned that Jason’s strong attachment to her might be making him emotionally vulnerable, possibly even contributing to his reluctance to speak.
Seeing the hurt flash across his mommy’s face, Skyler grew furious and began to smack Xavier’s arm on purpose.
“Keep that up and you’ll regret it.”
The boy’s defiance darkened Xavier’s expression. His voice was firm and left no room for negotiation, the authority in it so palpable that Şkyler froze mid–motion.
卷
It was the first time since they’d met that Daddy had used such a stern tone with him.
Skyler glared up at Xavier, eyes brimming with defiance and the beginnings of tears.
Hmph!
Just as I thought!
All Daddy knows how to do is bully Mommy and me.
Ignoring Isabella, Xavier adjusted the small boy against his shoulder and strode into the living room.
Isabella rushed forward but was stopped at the doorway.
Jacob stepped out, flanked by two security personnel, and offered Isabella an apologetic look.
“Mrs. Moore, Mr. Moore thought it might be better if you waited outside for this.”
“He’s my son, and I’m supposed to wait outside?”
Isabella was seething. Was Xavier really going this far?
“Jacob, step aside.”
Her voice was low and left no room for argument, as though she were prepared to push past him.
Jacob looked genuinely uneasy, his posture almost folding under the tension. “Mrs. Moore, please don’t put me in this position. Of course I wouldn’t dare block you, but if you go in now… Mr. Moore may not direct his displeasure at you, but he certainly won’t let
me off the hook.”
He paused, then added carefully, “Besides, Mr. Moore is only concerned that your presence might distract Jason during the evaluation. Given how attached he is to you, it could interfere.”

That last point gave Isabella pause.

Over the years, Jason’s progress had been slow, and maybe it really was because she had always given in too easily–whenever he resisted treatment or seemed uncomfortable, she’d call it off.
Deep down, she knew Xavier wasn’t actually going to harm the child. This was more about getting under her skin.
If he truly meant to hurt a little boy, why go to all the trouble of arranging a specialist team? Back when the Moores had come after her and the children, he could have simply stood aside… and he certainly wouldn’t have gotten hurt protecting Jason.
“Mrs. Moore,” Jacob said gently, “if it helps, Jason and Mr. Moore seem to be managing just fine in there. I’m sure the boy will cooperate.”
