Stanley had watched everything unfolding outside from where he sat. Each of his men was fitted with a discreet body camera, and though he seemed to be resting quietly in his room, he was fully aware of every move being made beyond the door.

Gordon stood nearby, checking Stanley’s blood pressure as part of his routine.

Teresa shot a quick glance toward Xavier before stepping aside.

“Your grandfather hasn’t been well lately,” she said quietly. “Try not to confront him directly.”

But Xavier acted as though he hadn’t heard her. He kept Isabella’s hand firmly in his, his expression dark and unyielding-yet there was a protective steadiness in him that Teresa had never seen before. It was the kind of look a man gets when he’s standing up for someone he loves.

For a moment, Teresa felt a pang of memory. Once, someone had held her hand like that too, standing between her and the world.

“Grandfather, your men have left. Jacob will see you out now.”

Xavier’s voice cut through the room as he approached Stanley. His tone was cool and left no room for negotiation.

Gordon instinctively took a step back.

Stanley gave a faint smile and looked up slowly. “Xavier, take a seat. You’re still recovering-no need to strain yourself.”

“My injuries are healing fine. But you should be conserving your energy at your age.”

Xavier spoke as if stating a fact. With a slight nod, he turned to go.

“Xavier. Stop.”

Stanley’s voice sharpened, and a heavy cough rattled through him.

Teresa moved forward with water and a tissue, but Stanley waved her off.

“Was there something else, Grandfather?”

Xavier’s voice remained level, too solid to be shaken.

There was a worn-out sadness in Stanley’s tone. “Are you really asking me to leave?”

“It’s not the most convenient arrangement for you to stay here.”

Xavier didn’t elaborate. His manner was detached, final.

“I’m only visiting my grandson. I’m not moving in permanently, and I’m certainly not asking you to wait on me. What’s so

inconvenient about that?”

Stanley’s voice grew rougher as he tried to keep his

composure.

He’d expected Xavier to be upset, maybe even to side with Isabella. But he never thought the grandson he’d raised would turn against him over an outsider.

You’ve already seen what makes it inconvenient. Your presence here has put my wife through enough.”

Xavier spoke deliberately each word measured. He-tightened his grip on Isabella’s hand and drew her closer.

She leaned into him, her cheek against his chest, feeling the quickened rhythm of his heartbeat and the warmth of his body. Emotion swelled inside her.

She hadn’t expected Xavier to confront Stanley so directly for her sake much less ask him to leave, risking a complete break.

Xavier had always been his own man, following his instincts and refusing to be controlled. But no matter how headstrong he was, Isabella had assumed he understood the weight of the Moore family legacy and how difficult Startey could be.

She’d always believed Xavier would choose pragmatism over sentiment.

Now, the tension in the room was so thick it made her palms damp.

It felt like something was about to snap.

“Xavier, is that any way to speak to your grandfather? Have you lost your mind? Or did that injury shake something loose?”

Teresa tried to mediate, putting on a tone of scolding disbelief.

But neither Xavier nor Stanley took the bait.

After a long silence, Stanley pushed himself up with his cane. He stepped closer until he stood before Xavier, who now towered over him by more than a head. The contrast only emphasized how frail and diminished age had made him.

“So my own grandson won’t even acknowledge me now?” Stanley finally said with a cold, dry laugh.

“You will always be my grandfather.” Xavier dipped his head slightly, his voice calm.

Stanley gave a slow nod. “And if I refuse to leave? Will you have me escorted out yourself?”

Xavier met his gaze without reply.

“Mr. Moore,” Isabella spoke up suddenly, “this is your grandson’s home. You’re welcome to stay… but Jason, Xavier and, and how this household is run-those aren’t yours to interfere with.”

Stanley’s bent frame still carried an air of authority, but it was edged with a cold, solitary pride.

In the Moore family, everyone showed him respect, everyone accommodated him-and everyone kept their distance.

Besides someone as obsessive as Wilson, hardly anyone treated him like real family.

For a second, Isabella almost felt sorry for him.

But more than that, she didn’t want to put Xavier in an impossible position.

She owed Xavier no further debt. So long as Stanley wouldn’t harm Jason, she could coexist with him.

“Since when does an outsider cut in when I’m speaking to my grandson?”

Stanley drew a sharp breath and shot Isabella an icy, derisive look.

Isabetta couldn’t help but laugh humorlessly to herself.

Some kindness, it seemed, was truly wasted.
