“An outsider? You didn’t seem to think so this morning when you came over to apologize. If you’d made that clear back then, I wouldn’t have just let you stay for lunch–I’d have packed up every single gift you brought for your great–grandson and handed them right back to you.”
Isabella decided there was no use holding back any longer. She’d had enough of Stanley’s attitude.
She didn’t care if they had it out right there in front of Xavier. In fact, it might even give her a clean break–a perfect reason to walk away for good.
But then… what about Jason’s treatment?
The thought flashed through her mind the moment the words left her mouth, followed by a pang of regret.
Stanley’s face went pale. He tightened his grip on his cane, let out a slow, heavy breath, and then began to laugh—a dry, humorless sound. “Well. Well. Well.”
But as soon as Stanley finished, Teresa sensed something was wrong. She rushed forward to support him.
His breathing turned ragged, his face flushing after the earlier pallor.
Gordon moved quickly to help, and together they guided Stanley back to the sofa. Gordon found the heart medication, handed him
pill, and waited as he took it.
Then he began gently massaging Stanley’s back, trying to steady his breathing.
‘Isabella, that’s enough!” Teresa snapped. “Xavier is already standing up for you. What more do you want?”
sabella opened her mouth to reply, but no words came out. She just stood there, feeling utterly wronged.
‘If my wife is considered an outsider,” Xavier’s voice cut in, cool and detached, “then I’m not part of the Moore family either.”
sabella looked at him, surprise flickering in her eyes. His expression gave nothing away–no emotion, no hesitation.
His gaze toward Stanley was steady and unreadable, so complex she could begin to decipher it.
‘Xavier, do you realize what you’re saying?” Teresa’s voice was frantic. “Are you really cutting ties with the family?”
Stanley was still struggling to catch his breath, and yet Xavier showed no sign of backing down.
No matter how stubborn or unreasonable Stanley could be, he was still her father.
“If Grandfather wants this house,” Xavier stated plainly, “he can have it. Isabella and I will be out by tonight”
He gave a slight, formal nod in Stanley’s direction.
“Teresa, I’ll leave Grandfather in your care.”
Before Isabella could fully process what was happening, Xavier took her hand and led her firmly out of the room.
Behind them, Teresa called out anxiously, “Xavier-!”

Jacob was waiting outside. As they passed, Xavier issued a crisp order, “Pack our things–mine, Isabella’s, and our son’s Find a move–in–ready property close to Moore Group.”
“Right away, Mr. Moore.”
It took Jacob a second to react. Truth be told, even Isabella was struggling to keep up with how quickly things were moving.
Xavier didn’t let go of her hand until they were back in their room.
Then, as if he’d used up every ounce of strength holding himself together, he braced one hand against the wall.
“Xavier… are you okay?”
Isabella reached for his wrist. His skin was cooler now, his pulse steadier than before.
He let out a low hum in response. He was exhausted–he’d been pushing himself just to keep upright in front of Stanley.
“I’m sorry,” he murmured, his voice softening suddenly near her ear as he drew her closer. “I didn’t mean to put you through that.”
He paused, then added quietly, “Don’t be afraid. I won’t let anything happen to you or our child.”
His tone was calm, matter–of–fact, yet it carried a sincerity that felt unquestionable.
Isabella could feel the steady rhythm of his heartbeat against her ear.
In that moment, her thoughts scattered into chaos.
“Why are you doing this?” she heard herself ask.
In her mind, the only reason Xavier had agreed to stay married was to protect his own reputation–and the Moore family’s.
Any affection he might have for her couldn’t be more than simple possessiveness, the kind of competitive streak a man feels when something slips out of his control. Nothing deeper.
She knew where she stood.
So why did Xavier keep saying and doing things that defied her expectations?
Isabella’s hands lifted slightly, as if to push him away, but she besitated.
She studied his striking face, so composed and detached from the mess around them. She didn’t understand him anymore
“Don’t you already know the answer?”
Xavier’s lips parted slightly. His gaze stayed fixed on her as his fingers brushed lightly through her hair
His eyes, deep and unreadable like the ocean, held a layered warmth a tenderness she couldn’t quite name
Isabella turned her face away, feeling her cheeks grow warm
It was as if his gaze alone was dissolving her defenses, melting her from the inside out
He was doing this on purpose, wasn’t he?

He’d never acted this way with her before. Even if he had feelings… no, she’d never actually seen him show affection to anyone
“When I first started at Moore Group,” she said quietly, “you told me you cared about interests, not emotions. Because emotions fade–interests don’t. So I don’t get it. What do you gain by going against Stanley?”
Even if Xavier was independent enough now not to need the Moore family name, Stanley still had powerful connections Taking him on wouldn’t be easy–not even for Moore Group
