Jacob could tell Xavier was really listening, so he figured he’d add one more thing-and he meant it.
Growing up with just his mom in a single-parent household, he didn’t even have a picture of his dad. It wasn’t the same as Jason’s situation, but he understood how sensitive and up-and- down someone’s emotions could get during times like these.
Xavier didn’t reply. He seemed to take in what Jacob said without pushing back.
“Now to business. Any update on Rachel?”
The moment Rachel disappeared, Xavier had Jacob launch a full-scale search, sparing no expense to track her down.
That so-called “Aletta” turned out to be a complete fraud.
Xavier had even put out a bounty for her on the dark web, exposing everything she’d done. But strangely, every account they used to post the hunt kept getting suspended or banned within hours-some even got doxxed.
Online, people were defending Aletta, accusing Xavier’s team of running a smear campaign.
The digital trail went cold, and offline efforts weren’t turning up anything either.
Rachel’s apartment was cleaned out. Every form of ID she had-aside from her name—was forged, and the fakes were so convincing they’d slipped right past Xavier’s investigators before.
“Useless.”
When Jacob delivered the update, Xavier’s temper flared. He got so worked up his injuries throbbed with a sharp, fresh pain.
“Mr. Moore… there might still be one lead we can follow.”
Jacob hesitated, then decided to share what he’d been keeping to himself.
“Because… I know Rachel.”
He’d recognized her the first time he saw her.
She hadn’t changed much since their school days-just more mature, with this distant look in her eyes now.

Jacob had a best friend growing up, someone like a brother. After graduation, they both joined Moore Group together, side by side.
Rachel was that friend’s girlfriend.
It took Jacob eight years to climb from an entry-level security detail at Moore Group to becoming Xavier’s assistant.
For seven and a half of those years, he was still just part of the protection team.
Everything changed six months ago, when a package containing explosives showed up at Moore Group.
Jacob’s friend spotted the threat and died containing the blast-saving Xavier’s life in the
process.
The investigation later traced it back to a rival firm Xavier had dismantled in a hostile takeover. They were aiming for revenge.
Jacob’s friend died in the line of duty, and on top of that, he died a hero for Xavier.
Everyone in the department knew Jacob was the man’s closest friend.
Not long after, Jacob was moved straight up to the executive floor to train as an assistant.
Eventually, he became Xavier’s most trusted right-hand man.
Jacob never forgot that his opportunity came at the cost of his friend’s life, so he threw himself completely into the job. In private, he did what he could to look out for Rachel.
But back then, Rachel was in a dark place-she blamed Xavier and Moore Group entirely for her boyfriend’s death-so Jacob never dared tell her he still worked for Xavier.
Eventually, she found out anyway. Two years later, the truth came out.
From that day on, she cut off all contact and disappeared.
The next time they saw each other was just recently.
It was an awkward reunion.
Rachel acted like she didn’t know him, and Jacob didn’t push it. At least as “Aletta”, she seemed to have been doing okay over the years.
“Why didn’t you mention this sooner?”

Chapter 211 Jacob’s Secret
After Jacob finished, Xavier’s gaze sharpened.
So Rachel had that kind of history with Jacob.
If she was targeting Noah as a way to get back at Xavier, it made sense.
But something still felt off-Xavier didn’t think it was that straightforward.
“It’s on me. I thought keeping things simple was better… and that led to this mess.”
Jacob kept his head down, his voice low. He was ready to face whatever came next.

Truth was, from the moment Xavier ordered him to find Rachel, Jacob knew this might happen.
Even if he’d stayed quiet, Xavier would’ve uncovered the connection sooner or later.
He’d rather come clean himself than let Xavier find out alone and feel completely betrayed. At least this way, he could say he did the right thing.
Over the years, he’d not only come to value his position-he’d also grown grateful to Xavier.
Sure, the man was hard to read and rarely gave a warm look, but Jacob had seen enough to know Xavier wasn’t heartless.
Beyond the ruthless exterior and the habit of settling every score, the man remembered what others had sacrificed for him.
He just didn’t always know how to show it.
“Was it about keeping things simple… or were you protecting her?”
Xavier’s words cut coldly through Jacob’s explanation.
Jacob’s guilt showed. “I… no, it wasn’t like that.”
“If you can’t find her, turn in your resignation.”
With that chilly remark, Xavier turned and walked back toward the study.
But beneath the surface, Jacob felt a flicker of warmth.
He knew if Xavier truly blamed him, it wouldn’t have been just a warning like that.
