Chapter 23 The Midnight Sandwich Runt
Chapter 23 The Midnight Sandwich Run
“I’m going to get something to eat. Do you want anything?”
After steeling herself for a moment, Isabella finally broke the silence.
Xavier didn’t even glance her way. “No, thank you,” he replied offhandedly.
Irritated, Isabella turned to leave. But as her hand reached for the door handle, she paused.

Harry had mentioned Xavier’s health wasn’t what it used to be. Deep down, she wasn’t surprised. Xavier had never had good eating habits, often skipping meals entirely when he was buried in work. She’d spent countless hours in the past trying to figure out ways to make sure he ate.
“That deli near St. Stephen’s is probably still open. Do you want a sandwich?” she asked, turning back.
Xavier preferred simple, convenient food. Believing sandwiches were a decent option, Isabella had once tried delis all over the city. Only that little family–run spot near the church had ever met Xavier’s exacting standards.
If he refused this, her conscience would be clear.
“St. Stephen’s is quite a distance from here,” Xavier said after a pause, his expression unreadable.
“The cab fare is on the company during off–hours. And… I could go for one of their sandwiches myself,” Isabella supplied, finding an excuse. It would sound too foolish to admit she was making the trip just for him.
“Always calculating,” Xavier sneered. “You have one hour.”
“Fine,” Isabella muttered, annoyed. Even when he was the one being looked after, he had to issue orders and set timers. He really did think he was royalty.
Late that night, after freshening up, Isabella limped toward the sofa, ready to sleep.
Xavier’s IV was done, but Harry had insisted he remain under observation overnight and be discharged in the morning. This meant
Isabella was stuck there, too.
“What’s wrong with your leg?” Xavier’s cool voice cut through the quiet.
“Not my leg. My foot. I’ve got a blister,” Isabella replied, slipping off her shoe and dabbing at her bleeding toe with a tissue. She wasn’t used to running around in heels anymore. It really hurt.
“How did that happen?” Xavier’s voice lowered slightly. She was too far away for him to see clearly.
Isabella didn’t look up. “It happens. Heels aren’t made for sprinting. And thanks to your countdown, I basically did parkour in
stilettos.”
Xavier pressed his lips together, at a loss for a response. He genuinely hadn’t considered that heels could cause blisters from running.
After a moment, he asked, “Did this happen often before?”

Hannah didn’t reply. It was likely morning where she was. Probably just busy.
Clutching her phone, Isabella drifted into a fitful sleep.
She slept poorly, chilled by the room’s air conditioning, gradually curling into a fight ball… until, not long after, a wave of warmt enveloped her. It felt as though someone was holding her from behind a broad, solid chest, carrying a familiar, subtly crisp
scent…
Suddenly, Isabella dreamt of the first time she’d met Xavier.
Soaking wet and disheveled, she had stumbled out of a restroom and crashed into him, Mumbling apologies through tears, the hadn’t dared to look up, her hands clutching his sleeves in her distress.
She’d expected to be shoved away in disgust. Instead, he’d scooped her into his arms. His deep, resonant voice, warm against her ear, had asked, “Who did this to you?”

Just then, her phone rang. It was Jason.
Jason didn’t speak. A teacher’s voice came on the line instead. “Hello, is this Jason’s mother? Jason has been missing you. Will you be coming to see him today?”
“I’m tied up with something today. I might be a bit late,” Isabella said, knowing Jason was listening eagerly on the other end. She softened her voice, “Sweetheart, be good for me. I miss you so much. I think about you every minute.”
At that moment, Xavier appeared in the doorway.
He caught her final words.
He stopped cold. The paper bag containing breakfast and the tube of antibiotic ointment he’d just gotten from Harry suddenly felt heavy and sharp in his hands.
So that’s it. A cold clarity settles over him. That’s why she’s in such a hurry for the divorce. There’s someone else
