Chapter 24 Hidden Concern and Awkward Truths.
He must have been out of his mind to feel any pity for a woman like her….
With a sharp crack, Xavier tossed the breakfast bag into the trash bin just outside the door.
The sound reached isabella. She ended the call immediately and looked toward the doorway, but it was empty.

After freshening up, Isabella headed to Harry’s office. She assumed Xavier would be there, but only Harry was present. It seemed Xavier had already left.
“Did you manage to get some rest last night, Ms. Carter?” Harry greeted her first.
Isabel a nodded with a polite smile. “The facilities here are quite good. The sofa was comfortable enough… and so was the bed.”
“The bed?” Harry paused briefly before continuing, “Right. Well, thanks to Xavier’s contributions to the hospital fund over the years, the wards are very well–appointed.”
Recalling that she’d woken up in the bed, Isabella felt a flicker of unease. She’d dreamt that Xavier had held her while she slept… but it was such a strange notion. Why would he have done that? More likely, he’d left early and, perhaps out of a cursory courtesy, had moved her to the more comfortable bed before going.
After exchanging pleasantries, Isabella turned to leave, but Harry stopped her. He turned and picked up a small box from his desk.
“What’s this?” Isabella asked, taking it with a puzzled look.
“It’s a topical antibiotic ointment. Very effective for blisters and abrasions,” Harry said casually. “I noticed you were in heels all day yesterday. It’s good to have on hand.”
“That’s very thoughtful of you, Dr. Ashford. Thank you.” Isabella accepted it with a smile, though a faint awkwardness settled between them.
Since when was Harry so attentive to her? His manner reminded her of the stereotypical “nice guy” who went out of his way to look after women.
Harry cleared his throat, offering a slightly strained smile. “You’re welcome. You’re Xavier’s wife, and he and I go way back. It’s the least I can do.”
But the explanation seemed to make the atmosphere even more uncomfortable, implying an impropriety that wasn’t there.
“Well, I should be going now.”
“Take care.”
Only after Isabella was out of sight did Harry let out a quiet sigh of relief. He closed his office door and spoke toward the private washroom. “You can come out now.”
Xavier stepped out, adjusted his cufflinks, and said coolly, “Appreciate it.”
“Hey, what exactly is going on between you two?” Harry couldn’t hold back. Not only was Isabella alive, but they had apparently divorced years ago, right?
So why were they acting like husband and wife again? And if they were back together, why did they seem to despise each other?

Even passing along a simple ointment had to be this convoluted.

“What you see is what you get.” Xavier replied dismissively, sinking into the sofa. He checked his watch. It was time to head to the office, but he had no inclination to move.
Harry was even more confused. “Come on, man. Who is it? I thought it was Linda. Or have you just been… waiting for Isabella all these years?”
The question earned him a glacial stare. “I haven’t been waiting for anyone.”
“Then why are you so tied up in knots about her? And why do you still care–”
Catching the darkening look on Xavier’s face, Harry’s voice trailed off into a mumble.
Xavier’s hearing was sharp. “She owes me a debt. And who said I care?” His tone was icy and edged with impatience.
Harry didn’t dare argue, but he was internally exasperated. The man before him had probably already forgotten who had called him before dawn, demanding he have a specific ointment ready for Isabella’s blisters…
“Alright, alright. Well, I wish you both… marital harmony.”
“Which part of this looks harmonious to you?”
Harry mentally kicked himself for not staying quiet. He forced a smile, trying to shift topics. “Xavier, shouldn’t you be heading to the office? Or are you still not feeling well?”
asked you a question.”
Unexpectedly, Xavier was dead serious. He fixed Harry with an intense, unnerving stare.
Harry felt a nervous prickle at the back of his neck. “Well… before, every time Ms. Carter came to the hospital, she could hardly talk for three minutes without mentioning you. That kind of affection… It shows in a person’s eyes. They’d just light up when she spoke about you. So now that you two have… reconnected, I just assumed things were more harmonious…”
That was then.” Xavier’s voice grew even colder. “I’m asking about now. Where, exactly, do you see harmony?”
“Now…”
