Xavier said nothing, stepping past Sander. His intimidating presence seemed to drop the temperature in the room by several degrees.
Sander, however, remained composed. “Xavier, I wish you’d called ahead. I could have met you downstairs. This is your first time here; the building can be confusing. How did you find me?”
Xavier didn’t look at him. “I had a guide.” With that, he walked straight toward Isabella.
Isabella’s body tensed. Her mind was still reeling, thoughts of Jason’s safety sending shockwaves through her system.
As Xavier closed in, she took repeated steps back until the small of her back hit the edge of the desk.
His tall frame loomed over her. His voice was low, each word a sharp blade. “Are you his mother?”
A cold dread settled in Isabella’s chest. He knew. Had he already met Jason?
A fine layer of perspiration broke out on her forehead. Her lips parted, but no sound came out.
Just then, Sander interjected. “Xavier, why don’t we all sit down? Did you come with someone else? I don’t see anyone in the hall.”
Only then did Xavier realize the little boy who had led him here was gone. But the coincidence was staggering–the child just happened to lead him straight to his mother, and that mother was Isabella?
“I don’t know what you’re talking about…” Isabella murmured, finding her voice at last. She tried to sidestep away, but Xavier seized her wrist and pulled her back.
The force was sudden. Isabella stumbled against the sharp corner of the desk, a jolt of pain shooting through her side, and she fell against his chest.
“Ah!”
Xavier’s heart clenched. His hand instinctively moved to support her injured side, but he was too late.
Isabella winced, her face contorted in pain. Xavier’s hand gently rubbed the spot. “Did you hit
it hard?”

His low inquiry was quickly drowned out by Sander’s concerned voice. “Xavier, be careful! You’re hurting her!”
Sander moved toward Isabella, but Xavier shot him a glare so cold it could freeze fire. “Back off.”
The command was absolute, his aura dark and threatening.
Isabella caught Sander’s eye. Seeing Xavier’s knuckles white where he gripped her shoulder, Sander had no choice but to stop, standing by awkwardly.
Their eyes met for a fleeting second, and Sander gave an almost imperceptible nod. Just before Xavier’s arrival, Isabella had confided in Sander about her current situation with Xavier -that they were legally married, but Jason was her child alone, a fact Xavier could never discover. She hadn’t had time to explain why before Xavier stormed in.
Xavier caught their silent exchange from the corner of his eye. A wave of bitter amusement washed over him, and he let out a short, harsh laugh.
“So the ‘ex–boyfriend‘ you mentioned is Sander? You left me for him five years ago, and the child is his too?”
Hearing Xavier’s words, Isabella first felt stunned, then a wave of relief, followed by sheer absurdity.
“Xavier, following me is bad enough. Now you’re just making up stories. Is this entertaining for you?”
It seemed Xavier had merely misinterpreted her relationship with Sander and likely hadn’t discovered Jason’s existence after all. If that was the case, she had nothing left to fear.
“Making up stories?” Xavier felt a vein throb at his temple. He wanted to laugh but couldn’t.
He narrowed his eyes, and the hand resting on her injured side tightened unconsciously. Isabella gasped at the renewed pressure.
“Whether it’s a story or not seems pretty clear… You’re so desperate for a divorce, coming here. again and again. Isn’t it all for him? Isabella, you have the nerve to do it but not to admit it. You’re despicable.”
Xavier gritted his teeth, his face drawing closer to hers, his expression so fierce it seemed he wanted to tear her apart on the spot.
He had been such a fool. He’d shown weakness five years ago after her betrayal, and now, with her return, he’d almost made the same mistake again.
