He turned around just as the child ran straight into his thigh. Xavier stopped. “Why are you following me? Are you lost?”
Jason shook his head, but stared up at Xavier with even more intensity, his eyes full of silent pleading.
Following the boy’s gaze, Xavier noticed a drink vending machine across the courtyard.
“Do you want some juice?”
Jason nodded instantly, his head bobbing with
eager enthusiasm.
Guided by Jason’s pointed finger, Xavier bought him a bottle of apple juice from the machine. Watching the little boy slurping happily, Xavier felt an unexpected flicker of satisfaction. His emotions had been muted for so long; it had been ages since he’d felt anything quite like this…
The two of them, man and child, sat on the bench. Jason deliberately left the last sip in the bottle and offered it to Xavier.
Xavier declined politely. “No, thank you. I’m not thirsty.”
Only then did Jason finish the drink. After he was done, he deftly pulled a large–model phone from the pocket of his overalls, typed out a line of text with surprising speed, and showed it to Xavier.
“For the juice, you be my daddy?”
This good–looking little fellow certainly had some big ideas.
“Does your mother know you’re trying to pick up a dad on the street?” Xavier asked, a faint, uncharacteristic gentleness in his voice that even he noticed.
Jason shook his head, then started typing another message with great seriousness. Before he finished, Xavier leaned over, curious.
“Mommy has car, house, and pretty. Single and 26 old.”
The point–by–point sales pitch was more thorough than a professional matchmaker’s. Xavier almost laughed out loud. For a moment, he genuinely wanted to meet the mother who had raised such a charming child.
“I’m sorry, but I’m already married,” Xavier said after a pause, hating to disappoint him.

The little boy’s face fell instantly, his whole posture wilting like a neglected plant. He looked on the verge of tears.
At a loss, Xavier offered an awkward consolation. “But… my marriage probably isn’t going to last much longer…”
Hearing this, Jason’s head snapped up, his big, watery eyes filled with renewed hope.
“You’re young,” Xavier continued. “When you’re older, you’ll understand that marriage isn’t always a good thing. It might be better that your mother is single.”
Seemingly inspired, Jason started typing on his phone again. Xavier watched as he typed the word “heartbreak“. Immediately, a related search suggestion popped up. “Heartbreak isn’t the end. Don’t give up on the whole garden because of one flower.”
Jason tapped on this sentence and proudly showed the screen to Xavier.
Xavier felt as if his chest had been filled with stones. He never imagined someone would diagnose him with “heartbreak“. Isabella had betrayed him five years ago, and now, five years later, she was openly involved with anothe
man. All he wanted was to make her pay, to see her
suffer. But in the end, was he the one nursing a broken heart?
No. To have a broken heart, one had to have been in love… and what existed between him and Isabella was just a tangled mess of obligation and betrayal.
Xavier stood up to leave. Jason immediately blocked his path, clutching his pant leg and waving the phone again. This time, Xavier didn’t need to look to guess the message. “Want me meet your mom?”
Jason nodded frantically, his small body trembling with excitement. If this man walked away, he might never find such a perfect daddy again!
Xavier reached out a hand but found he couldn’t bring himself to push the boy aside.

A few minutes later, Jason expertly led Xavier back into the office building, pressed the button for the ninth floor in the elevator, and stood confidently beside him.
“Is
your mother a staff member here?” Xavier asked, surprised. Jason shook his head.
Well, I’ll find out soon enough.
The elevator doors opened, and Jason tugged Xavier directly toward the suite of offices for the child psychology specialists. He seemed unsure which door was the right one, standing on
