Still, out of the corner of her eye, Isabella caught sight of the extravagant seafood feast laid out nearby–lobster, hairy crabs, the whole deal.
Two people, that much food? It is a bit much.
Xavier caught the flicker of emotion on her face.
Just as Isabella was about to leave, he spoke again. “Linda ordered way too much. You sure you don’t want some?”
Maybe it was her imagination, but his voice had an almost gentle tone, and the way he kept saying “Linda” felt a bit jarring to her.
Right. The first love always gets special treatment. With her around, he can actually be pleasant.
“I already ordered takeout,” Isabella said coldly, though she couldn’t help pressing her lips together.
Xavier gave a stiff smile. “Takeout can go in the fridge. Save it for Jacob. He’s out running errands and hasn’t eaten yet.”
Isabella couldn’t figure out what he was playing at. Here he was, having lunch alone with Linda, and now he was asking her to stay.
What, just to rub it in my face?
“Exactly,” Linda chimed in, already heading to the table to pop open the containers. “Xavier told me you can’t resist seafood, Ms. Carter. Seriously, don’t be shy.”
The already tempting aroma grew even richer.
Isabella steeled herself and flashed a smile. “Well, since you insist–thanks.”
What was the big deal about sharing a meal, anyway? If anyone should feel awkward, it wasn’t her.
With that, she sat down right across from the hairy crabs. To her surprise, Xavier slid into the seat next to her.
Linda handed out disposable gloves and opened the vegetable juice Isabella had brought, setting a can in front of each of them.

Just as Isabella reached to push it away, Xavier took it away and replaced it with bottled water.
“Isabella doesn’t like the taste of vegetable juice.” He set the can in front of Linda instead.
Isabella’s chest tightened.
She really did hate the weird aftertaste of that stuff.
Back when Moore Group gave out those health drinks as employee perks, she used to give hers away–every single bottle–to the local school or a shelter.
One time, Xavier asked her, “You don’t like vegetable juice?” She shook her head, and after that, the company stopped handing them out altogether.
Linda’s expression dimmed slightly. “Really? I actually love it.”
Isabella snapped back to the present.
What am I even thinking?
If he knows I don’t drink it, that juice was obviously for her.
Having me fetch it for them–what a cute little show of affection.
She didn’t say anything. Instead, she quietly picked out a crab, skillfully pried it open, and placed the meat on a disposable plate.
Her routine was always the same: prep everything first, then dig in.
Linda, clearly not as practiced, struggled through one crab while Isabella had already finished
two.
She immediately slid her finished crab toward Xavier. “Here, Xavier. Eat a little. I’ll work on the legs for you.”
Isabella, meanwhile, kept her head down and started eating with obvious enjoyment.
Seeing her completely ignore his presence, Xavier felt an unexpected pang of irritation.
Linda’s question at the office door echoed in his mind again.
She did?
So she claimed she loved me?

But was it ever real?
If she really did love me back then… what about now? Does that love just disappear?

Xavier’s gaze turned cold as he watched her. She was cating with real enthusiasm–she clearly loved the food.
But back in the day, no matter how much there was, she’d peel every last piece and pile it into his plate.
Even if, most of the time, he never touched a bite.
“Xavier, you’re not eating. Is it not to your taste, or did I not clean it well enough?” Noticing he was lost in thought, Linda spoke up again.
Just then, the plate of crab meat and roe that Isabella had been working on was taken from her hands. In its place, a full, untouched crab was set before her.
She looked up and met Xavier’s icy eyes. “Take this whole crab apart.”
“Why me? Do you not have hands, Xavier?” Frustration flashed across her face.
