And Xavier–he didn’t want her there. She was just getting in the way of him and Linda. So he was making things harder for her on purpose.

After a long moment, Isabella turned back to face Xavier, letting out a bitter laugh.

She walked back to her seat. “Alright. If Mr. Moore needs me so badly, I’ll do it.”

Isabella ignored him from then on, working faster out of sheer frustration.

The tools the restaurant provided were clunky, so she mostly just bit into the shells and pried them apart with her fingers in a sloppy, careless manner. Linda watched from the side, wincing.

Then, pressing too hard, Isabella cut her finger.

Blood welled up immediately. Before she even realized what happened, someone grabbed her hand and pressed a napkin against the cut.

“Are you that stupid?” Xavier asked.

Isabella looked up and saw him frowning deeply. She froze for a second, then tried to pull her hand back.

But he held on–his presence overwhelming, completely overpowering her.

It wasn’t until he pulled the napkin away and checked that the bleeding had stopped that he finally let go.

Still, the sight of her red, raw fingertips made his chest tighten.

His expression was grim. “Aren’t you supposed to be good at this? You hate doing it for me that much?”

“Xavier, do you even have a conscience?” Isabella shot him a hurt, exasperated look. “You think this is easy? I just got injured on the job. Do you have to be such a jerk about it?”

His lips parted slightly–like he was about to say something–but then he stopped.

He caught the faint redness at the corners of her eyes.

For a moment, Xavier’s chest ached. He had the sudden urge to pull her into his arms.

But when his hand reached her shoulder, he only gave her a light push. “You. Get out.”

Isabella blinked in surprise. The push wasn’t hard, but it caught her off guard.

For a second, she thought he was going to hit her.

“You are…firing me?” she asked.

Xavier looked away, exasperated. “You’re hurt. No.”

Linda, sensing the tension, had lost her appetite. “Isabella, Xavier’s picky about his food. You should go clean that up. I have some ointment in my office–I’ll bring it to you later.”

By the time work ended, she still hadn’t eaten anything else.

To avoid running into Xavier again, she slipped into the restroom ten minutes before quitting time.

But the moment she entered the women’s restroom, a kid carrying a skateboard popped out from the stall next to her.

He glanced at his smartwatch and smirked.

Shortly after Isabella left the Moore Group building, the entire power system went dark. Every computer screen went black.

Xavier was in the middle of an emergency meeting when Jacob rushed in to brief him.

Within minutes, Jacob returned with an update. “Mr. Moore, someone’s breached the company’s security system. Our team is working on it, but the person is fighting back. It’s going to take time.”

He walked over, took over one of their computers, and after a few swift, decisive moves, forced his way into a chat interface.

Jacob stared in shock. He’d worked for Xavier for years–he had no idea Xavier had this kind

of skill.
