something she didn’t understand.
Chapter 39 We Can Divorce
She thought that after all those harsh words, Xavier would just want to kill her.
But this time, it was different from five years ago. The way he looked at her–the murderous hatred was gone. Instead, he almost looked hurt.
She said, “Xavier…”
“That thing you said–about loving me once,” he cut her off. “Does it still count?”
His voice, usually so proud, dropped low and heavy.
Isabella froze for a moment.
His face was sharp as a statue, handsome and unreadable–flawless, and impossible to tell what was really going on underneath.
“Xavier, do you get off on controlling people?” Her mocking words came out sharp. “Is that it? These five years, was Linda not pathetic enough for you? Did it throw off your expectations?”
Xavier’s throat moved. A wave of bitterness rose up from his stomach and settled in his chest. It wasn’t exactly painful, but it lingered, growing stronger the more he felt it.
The light that used to be in her eyes–the one from when they first met–was gone.
He already had his answer.
“Fine. We can divorce,” he said.
An hour later, Isabella arrived at the therapy center.
She checked on Jason first, then headed to Sander’s office. He wasn’t picking up his phone, and she was starting to worry.
But when she got there, she found out he’d taken the day off.
She went back to Xavier’s villa and packed up her things–not that there was much she actually wanted to take.
That was when Sander finally called back.
Isabella picked up right away. “Sander?”
“Hey, I saw you called me five times.” His voice was gentle on the phone.
She hesitated, then asked, “Did something happen? Xavier might have gotten the wrong idea. I think he might go after the Whitman family.”
“Yeah.” Sander’s tone was calm, almost like he was smiling. “The Whitman family has been tied to the Moore family for years. I always knew this day would come. It’s not your fault.
“But I’m glad you care enough to ask.”

Chapter 39 We Can Divorce
“What exactly happened?” Isabella felt terrible.
She’d said those things just to get under Xavier’s skin, and now Sander was paying for it.
Sander’s father, Fenton Whitman, had married into the Moore family.
+5 Free Coins
Back then, he’d done it to protect the Whitman family’s real estate business–a deal that tied him to Xavier’s aunt, Teresa Moore.
But not long after the wedding, Fenton was driving when Xavier’s father, Tanner Moore, was in the car. He was exhausted, fell asleep at the wheel, and crashed. Tanner ended up paralyzed.
The Moore family pushed to have Fenton charged with intentional homicide. He got life in prison.
After that, the Moore family treated Sander like the son of a criminal. And the Whitman family blamed him for everything–for the debt they owed Moore Group, for all of it.
Teresa sent him away to a boarding school before he even finished high school.
“Whitman Properties…” Sander finally told her. “It went under this morning.”
Just as I suspected.
That’s very Xavier.
Isabella’s heart sank. She didn’t know what to say.
Sander had suffered his whole life. He’d only recently started patching things up with the Whitman family. And now, because of her –because of something she said in anger–he was the one taking the fall.
After a long pause, she asked quietly, “Is that why you canceled our appointment?”
Sander’s voice stayed light. “My family called me back home this morning. They wanted me to go apologize to the Moore family.
“But Xavier wouldn’t even see my mom, let alone me. Besides, it’s done. The Whitman family has been struggling for years anyway. Even if Xavier hadn’t made a move, we wouldn’t have lasted much longer.”
He said it so casually, but Isabella could picture exactly how those cold, cruel people must have treated him.
Five years ago, on Christmas, Xavier had taken her to Moore Manor.
That was the first time she’d met Sander. He was still in grad school then, wearing glasses and simple clothes.
He’d just gotten back from school, but dinner had already started. He stood there as if he had been forgotten–the Whitman family and the Moore family filled the big table, and no one had saved him a seat.
Isabella suggested they bring an extra chair. But Xavier shut her down with a look.
