“Three or four days?” Hannah studied Skyler, feeling something was off.

But Skyler didn’t say anything more. He just grabbed the laptop and headed to his room. “I’m going to work. You should get some

rest.”

That night, Allen Villa was lit up bright. There was a barbecue setup outside. Inside, the hall was packed with business partners and family friends.

Megan was in the corner on the phone with Linda when she saw her walk in weakly.

Linda was still in the same clothes she’d worn earlier–no party outfit, no makeup.

“Linda, what took you so long? You didn’t even change. This is a dinner party.” Megan grabbed Linda’s arm, scolding her.

“I just got out of the hospital. I’m exhausted…” Linda opened her mouth to say more, but the smell of food from the hall hit her–it made her stomach turn.

Megan’s eyes widened. “What’s going on? Are you pregnant again? Xavier…”

“Don’t say that.” Linda clamped a hand over her mouth.

Too many people around. If someone got the wrong idea, it’d be a disaster. Xavier hadn’t even touched her hand in years. There was no way she was pregnant.

“Fine, fine.” Megan waved it off. “Just go change. Your dad has a big surprise for you tonight. You can’t come out like this.”

She pulled Linda upstairs.

Linda frowned. “What surprise?”

Megan just smiled. She pushed Linda into a room and pulled out a white gown. “Put this on. I knew you wouldn’t be prepared, so i bought it for you. It’s your size,”

Linda stared at it. “This is a wedding dress.” Her voice went tense. “If I wear this, Xavier’s going to think I’m pushing him to marry

me.”

“Just wear it. I’m your mother–do you think I’d do something to hurt you?” Megan wasn’t backing down, so Linda changest

She asked, “By the way–did the Carter family heiress show up?”

“She’s not stupid. She wasn’t going to fall for this.” Megan shrugged “But that’s fine. As long as Xavier comes tonight”

Linda’s face fell. “Wait… She’s not coming?”

She’d put up with all that humiliation for nothing

A pair of headlights swept past the window. Megan glanced out, then zipped up Linda’s dress.

She smiled, “That’s Xavier. He’s here.”

Ray spotted him from across the room. He smiled and led a group over.

He said, “Xavier, glad you made it. Let me introduce you to some friends of mine. They’d love to work with Moore Group.”
