Even if Xavier didn’t care at all about his stepmother, there was no way he was so furious that he’d go after his own birth mother right away, was there?
He was absolutely terrifying.
“So there’s nothing left to talk about.”
Isabella turned to leave, but Xavier reached out and caught her arm once more.
And it just so happened to be the hand that was still stained with blood.
Both Xavier and Isabella noticed it at the same time–Isabella’s tweed blazer was white, and the bright red bloodstain stood out sharply against the clean fabric.
For a split second, the man actually looked flustered, and he quickly let go of her arm.
“Just throw that jacket away. I’ll buy you a brand new one.”
Xavier’s throat felt tight as he spoke, and he lifted his blood–stained hand to nervously adjust his tie again.
“You think a new piece of clothing is going to fix this?” Isabella let a faint, bitter smile tug at her lips. “Xavier, I really don’t get it. If I’m so meaningless to you, why are you clinging to me this tightly?”
“No,” Xavier answered without a second’s hesitation, his voice sharp and urgent. “I never thought you were meaningless… not ever.”
The man’s forehead creased deeply, and for the first time, his eyes lacked their usual cold, arrogant edge. It was as if he’d suddenly fallen from a place of pride and power straight into the dirt.
His voice was low and gentle now, even carrying a faint, unguarded vulnerability.
For a moment, she almost believed him.
“One jacket isn’t enough. You can pick as many as you want.”
Xavier spoke again, his tone slowly slipping back into its familiar coldness. “As long as you don’t divorce me, anything you want from now on–I’ll give it to you.”
If she had heard those words before, no matter how icy his voice had been, she would have

probably been moved to tears.
But does sugar taste sweet when it comes too late?
No, it doesn’t. It tastes bitter.
“Xavier, what kind of revenge is this?”
“It’s not revenge.”
Xavier’s voice was deep, his face unreadable. “We’re starting over.”

Isabella stared into the man’s dark, piercing eyes and hesitated for a few long seconds.
Did that mean he no longer resented their empty, loveless marriage?

Had he truly let go of the fact that she had once been pregnant with another man’s child?
Was he no longer bothered by the thought that she might still have feelings for Sander?
A flood of questions swirled in her mind, but in the end, she only asked one that felt almost silly to say out loud. “What do you mean… starting over?”
Was he saying none of those things mattered to him anymore? Or was he saying that she didn’t matter to him at all?
If what Emma had told him was true–that he’d once loved someone so deeply he would have risked his life for them–then it might not have mattered who stood beside him. Any woman would have done just fine.
She found herself holding her breath, curious about what he would say next.
What was it that made her more fit to be his partner than Linda, or any other woman in his life?
At the same time, Jacob had finished compiling all the information on the parents of new students at the school. He looked at the list in his hand, his expression one of clear surprise.
“The miracle doctor ‘Aletta… Could it be her…”

Xavier was about to answer when his phone suddenly buzzed.

He pulled it from his pants pocket and was about to decline the call when he saw it was from Jacob.
The matter he had asked Jacob to investigate had likely produced results.
Seeing the man hesitate, Isabella spoke up at the right moment. “You should take that.”
Xavier quickly answered the phone. Jacob’s voice came through the receiver. “Mr. Moore, I think I found the Aletta. I’m currently with her child.”
“Good,” Xavier glanced at Isabella, his tone calm. “I’ll be right there.”
Isabella faintly heard the word “child” and felt an inexplicable sense of unease.
“What is it?” Isabella asked Xavier as soon as he ended the call.
“I need to go to the therapy center,” Xavier replied truthfully. “We can discuss the rest tonight. I’ll take you home.”
With that, Xavier strode out of the cemetery.
Isabella paused for a moment before quickly catching up.
Back in the car, she immediately asked Xavier, “What are you going to the therapy center for?”
Thinking of Jason being there, even the slightest disturbance made her heart tighten.
Xavier didn’t look at her. After smoothly backing the car out, he finally replied coldly, “You seem very nervous about me going to the therapy center.”
“Me? Why would I be nervous?”
Isabella turned her face away, avoiding Xavier’s gaze. After a moment, she feigned calmness and sneered, “We haven’t finished discussing our matters, and now you’re suddenly rushing off somewhere else. Are you hiding something?”
