Xavier’s words sent a cold shiver running all the way through Isabella, from the top of her head down to her toes.
“Unless Sander’s father had completely lost his mind, there’s no way he would ever dare pull something like that–even if he hated the Whitman family with everything he had. This is all just your guesswork –”
“I did find proof.”
Xavier turned around again. His usually handsome face was clouded over and grim, his expression dark and menacing.
“And that proof is in Sander’s hands–the same man you’re so convinced is innocent.”
Isabella couldn’t tell if Xavier was telling the truth or simply trying to upset her. She fell silent, waiting for him to go on.
A heavy, long silence stretched out between them.
Xavier pressed his hand against the headstone, his fingernails digging hard into the carved grooves. The scrapes on his palm from earlier had already begun to scab over, but under the sharp pressure against the stone, fresh blood started to well up at once.
When Isabella saw it, a sharp twist went through her chest, accompanied by a faint, gnawing sense of unease.
“If you really had proof, Sander and his father would have been locked up a long time
worse.”
ago–or
“You just don’t believe me.”
Xavier turned to look at Isabella, his face cold and distant, a flicker of barely visible loneliness laced within his bitter, mocking tone.
“Why… should I believe you?” Isabella asked quietly, her voice steady.
Xavier really did look ridiculous, didn’t he? The trust between them had been broken and gone for ages, after all.
“Fenton kept a diary, and he wrote everything down in it.” Xavier’s voice was icy cold, though there was a tired, defeated edge to it that hadn’t been there before. “But Sander destroyed it.”

Isabella’s heart dropped instantly. “How could you possibly know that?”
Xavier lowered his voice, almost to a murmur. “I overheard them.”

A year after the crash, Tanner had a private, closed–door talk with Sander. Xavier had been standing right outside the door the entire time.
Fenton had always kept a habit of writing in a journal. He carried it with him everywhere, even when he went on trips with Tanner.
But after the car accident, while Tanner was still barely hanging onto consciousness, he’d watched Fenton throw the diary into the thick brush on the opposite side of the road.
Tanner never breathed a word of it to anyone in the Moore family, and the whole incident was written off as nothing more than a tragic accident.
Only Xavier had noticed that Tanner later secretly sent someone back to the crash site to dig up a badly damaged journal.
It was Fenton’s diary.
After that, Tanner became preoccupied. No matter how many times Xavier asked, he refused to say a word.
Until Xavier overheard his conversation with Sander.
Sander clearly knew something. He was willing to trade his own life, begging Tanner to spare his father and the Whitman family.
But Tanner didn’t respond. He just gave the diary back to Sander and said, “Keep this. It was all just an accident.”
Xavier immediately barged in, only to see Sander react quickly, grabbing the diary and rushing into the bathroom.
The damaged journal was flushed down the drain in an instant.
After that, with Tanner doing everything to keep things quiet, it truly became just an accident.
“But… that still doesn’t prove Fenton intentionally killed anyone…”
Isabella was surprised Xavier would share all this with her.
During those three years by his side, he had never mentioned any of it.

He would only coldly remind her to know her place after seeing her talk to Sander, and then, behind closed doors, make sure Sander faced even harsher treatment within the Whitman family.
Back then, she had just thought the man was being excessively hard on Sander because of what happened to his father.
“They say women lose all reason when it comes to love. Guess it’s true.”
Xavier sneered, though it was clear he was barely holding back his anger.
“Sander isn’t good enough for you. If he really liked you, why didn’t he make a move in the five years after we split? The only reason he’s coming around now is to use you.”
The man’s words were cold and harsh, but his eyes were burning intensely.
“Is that… concern from an ex–husband? We’re about to get divorced, and you’re actually worried I’ll get fooled by some bad guy?”
Isabella found it a little absurd and said so plainly.
Such a blunt warning… It really wasn’t Xavier’s style at all.
“When did I say I agreed to divorce you?”
Xavier gritted his teeth, looking at the woman’s stubborn face. He wanted to crush her right there.
Crush her and put her back in my pocket.
