Chapter 76 Exhausted
It was not Xavier who deserved to die…
It was her…
She still could not bring herself to do it.
The night grew deeper, the wind stronger.

Isabella clutched her phone, curled under the covers. She had only just drifted off when she felt a weight settle beside her–someone had slipped into bed.
She jerked awake, but before she could turn over, she was enveloped by a strong, embrace.
broad
Xavier pressed against the delicate curve of her neck, which carried the faint scent of body wash. “Still awake this late?”
His voice was low and rough—especially rough. Kavier sounded utterly drained, as if he had pushed his voice to its limit.
“Who said I was awake? You woke me up—”
“Your eyelashes fluttered just now.”
Isabella’s words were cut off as Xavier’s sank in. Her heart dropped–what did that mean?
Had he… been watching her for a while before getting into bed?
Isabella tried to turn, but Xavier rested his forehead against her back.
“Isabella, I’m exhausted today. Let me just sleep like this for a while.”
“Xavier, about the divorce—”
The moment the word “divorce” left her lips, Xavier gently pressed a finger to her mouth. “Shh,” he hushed her, signaling her not to go on.
It felt like a tender tug at her heart–and Isabella truly fell silent.
“Later… there are still things at Moore Group to handle. I’ll leave after two hours of sleep.”
After a moment, Xavier added, his voice hoarsend slightly slurred.
In the dead of night, Isabella did not have much strength left. She struggled faintly a few

If it were not for the complete lack of alcohol on him, she would have suspected he was drunk again–not in his right mind.
Ever since they had met, Xavier had thrown himself entirely into his work. On the surface, he seemed like an untiring machine, always perfectly composed.
But of course she could see how exhausted he was…
How could someone who never allowed himself time to release his emotions not be
exhausted?
“Couldn’t you sleep in your own room? Why squeeze in with me?”
Isabella grumbled quietly, displeased.
“You’re warm.”
Xavier murmured slowly against her ear, his voice so low it almost seemed like her imagination.
His body did carry a chill from outside–he had not even changed his clothes.
“Is there anyone as exploitative as you… Not enough with pushing me around outside, now even when sleeping…”
Isabella’s tone remained cold, but inside, she felt a pang of sorrow.
No matter how warm she was, she had not managed to warm his heart when it mattered.
No matter how warm she was, she could never compare to the one who had always lived in his heart–the one who could never return.
But Xavier did not reply, as if he had already fallen asleep.
Isabella steadied her breathing and tried to pry away the hand he had wrapped around her waist. But the moment she touched it, her fingers brushed against the scar on the back of his hand…
That night, Isabella slept soundly.
But when she woke, the spacious bed held only her.
If not for the bank card placed on the other pillow, she would have thought it was all just an unusually vivid dream.

The little boy seemed settled at school, not as clingy for her as before. But when Jason quietly showed her his drawings, Isabella’s heart still clenched with guilt
Sander happened to be nearby. He told Isabella that Jason’s condition had improved quite a bit–he had the desire to speak, but needed a more suitable and secure environment.
The two spoke privately for a while longer. Sander mentioned that a safe home could help the child make further progress in his treatment
After ending the call, Isabella felt heavy–hearted.
A safe home… if that was all it took, Jason would have started speaking long ago.
She understood what Sander was hinting at, and she saw the longing in Jason’s eyes.
What Jason needed was a real family of three–something she might never be able to give him.
“Mrs. Moore, these are the newly hired household staff. Mr. Moore said you should choose them yourself.”
Isabella had just changed and come downstairs when she saw Jacob leading two rows of young maids standing in the hall.
