Isabella answered the call right away. “Sander.”

“I saw your missed calls. I was busy at the school this morning and didn’t have my phone on
me.”
“Yeah, something happened today… it looked like Xavier showed up at the therapy center…”
“I was actually just about to call and talk to you about that.”
Sander spoke before Isabella could even finish her sentence.
Xavier had been digging into information about newly enrolled students and their parents ever since the day before. That kind of record was supposed to be strictly confidential, but Sander had gotten wind of it early.
He’d been worried Xavier was hunting for Isabella, so he’d gone ahead and altered the registration dates for both Isabella and Jason.
“By the way, do you know a parent named Rachel?”
“Huh?”
Isabella’s sudden question caught Sander off guard. “I haven’t met every parent at the school. If you want, I can look into it for you-”
“No, don’t worry about it. It’s all confidential school information anyway. I was just asking out of curiosity.”
So Rachel probably wasn’t someone Sander had planted or arranged for.
That made sense; Sander didn’t even know who Xavier was looking for in the first place.
Isabella thanked Sander once more.
But as she spoke, a thought suddenly hit her–Xavier wasn’t actually targeting Jason… he was only looking for Aletta.
If that man really did find her, could this be the perfect chance to finally settle things between them for good?
If she made Noah’s treatment a condition, Xavier would surely agree to the divorce without hesitation.

After all, their entire marriage had only been for Noah’s benefit from the very beginning.
“Don’t mention it. It’s the least I can do. My cousin has a really extreme temper; I was just scared he might hurt you.”
Sander’s voice was thick with genuine concern. After a short pause, he went on, “By the way, about the divorce… is my cousin still giving you a hard time about it?”
Isabella let out a bitter, helpless smile. “Divorce is always a long, messy fight.”
Sander’s tone suddenly turned a little colder and sharper. “If there’s anything I can do to help you, just let me know.”
“Alright.” Isabella agreed absentmindedly, but her mind was elsewhere entirely.
All at once, the words Xavier had spoken to her in front of Tanner’s grave flashed sharply through her mind.
If Sander’s father had really harmed someone on purpose…
And if Sander had known the truth all along…
Then his attitude toward Xavier should never have seemed so innocent and unaware…
Besides, their meeting… if it had truly been a coincidence, it was far too perfect to be random.
“Sander.”
Just before she ended the call, Isabella suddenly spoke his name again.
“What is it?”
“That car accident between your father and Xavier’s… it really was just an accident, wasn’t it?”
Isabella’s question plunged the other end of the line into sudden, heavy silence.
After a long pause, just as Isabella was about to drop the topic and move on, Sander’s voice finally came through again. “I know my cousin must have said something to you.”
Isabella neither confirmed nor denied it.
In her heart, Sander was not just someone she pitied; he was also the friend she had quietly considered him to be all these years.
She refused to let suspicion cloud her judgment of him.

“I swear on everything. If my father hurt anyone on purpose, may I suffer a terrible fate. May everything go wrong for me.”
Sander’s voice was low and solemn, deadly serious.
But that oath was far too extreme, nothing like his usual gentle manner at all.
“I’m sorry.” Isabella’s heart jolted slightly. “I shouldn’t have asked you that.”
“You still don’t believe me, do you?”
Sander added suddenly, his tone softening into a faint laugh, gentle and calm just like whenever they spoke.
“It’s alright. I know my cousin means a great deal to you.”
Isabella wanted to deny it, but when she opened her mouth, no sound came out for some
reason.
A moment later, the call ended.
Sander had left her with only one final line.
“Isabella, truth is… you mean a lot to me too. I might lie to other people, but I would never lie to you.”
Sander’s words sounded sincere enough, warm and genuine.
If nothing else, he seemed far more trustworthy than someone as cold and distant as Xavier…
That night, the wind blew fiercely outside the window, shaking entire clusters of tree branches back and forth.
Isabella could not fall asleep. She tossed and turned in bed, and every time she closed her eyes, Xavier’s words repeated in her head nonstop.
Start over…
Make her happy…
He clearly didn’t love her. He clearly already had someone else in his heart he could never replace. How could he say such things so casually?
The more Isabella thought about it, the angrier she became. And to make it worse, he had even locked her up in the house all alone.

Picking up her phone and scrolling through her contacts, Isabella gritted her teeth. She almost dialed her grandfather’s number.
“Sweetheart, don’t get upset over someone who isn’t worth it. Tell me, how do you want him to die?”
“Shall I break his leg? His arm? Or cut off his manhood… Or, I’ll just have my guys handle it.”
Back when Isabella had returned home, her grandfather’s words were still vivid in her
memory.
Her grandfather always wore the kindest smile while saying the most terrifying things.
Isabella knew very well it was no empty threat.
When she was little and had a fight with a friend, her grandfather had comforted her the same way. Later, that friend’s whole family had disappeared…
She had asked her parents, but no one ever told her what really happened.
Only her mother had told her that her grandfather had a lot of people who worked in the shadows, doing frightening things, so she could not just go running to her grandfather to vent her anger
for her.
