Navier shifted his hand slightly higher on her waist and lifted her clean off his lap, holding her up in the air.
She had no way to steady herself.
Isabella kicked and flailed, trying to get up, but then Xavier stood up while still holding her.
Her hands immediately went around the man’s neck on their own, afraid she might fall.
“Xavier, you-”
“I’m not letting go.”
Before Isabella could finish, he answered first.
Xavier carried her in long strides toward the refrigerator, his voice flat and unreadable. “You’re the one who climbed onto me. Since you can’t sit still, I might as well tie you up.”
What did she mean, couldn’t sit still? Did he even listen to what people were saying?
Isabella was so angry she could barely breathe. “Tie me up? Xavier, you’re getting more and more out of line! I made you food with good intentions. I was trying to make things right between us. You’re already keeping me from doing what I want, and now you want to tie me up too?”
A flicker passed through Xavier’s eyes. Before he could say anything, two maids approached from the other direction.
When they saw Isabella being held by Xavier, looking completely wronged, their faces filled with concern.
They hurried over. “Mr. Moore, is there anything Mrs. Moore needs help with?”
“Mrs. Moore wants some milk. Bring it here,” Xavier said calmly.
“I don’t need milk! And I don’t even like it!” Isabella kept squirming in Xavier’s arms, thrashing like a fish that had just been caught.
The maids hesitated for a second but went to get it anyway.
Xavier frowned and gave a warning. “Keep moving around like that, and I really will tie you up.”
“To me!”

Chapter 82 A Taste
When she heard that last part, Isabella backed down.
Navier wasn’t the type to joke around, and he could be harsh when he wanted.
Besides, she wasn’t here to start a fight with Xavier today…
“Navier… I really didn’t put any hot peppers in it

A moment later, with her face against the man’s chest, Isabella spoke up again, her voice soft.
She made her tone as proper, gentle, and sincere as she could.
“If you still don’t believe me, put me down. I’ll go get it for you to try, just a small bite… Even if your sense of taste isn’t great, you’ll still feel something, right? See if your body heats up, and then you’ll know.
“Or, you could have one of the new maids taste it for you. They were all around me while I was cooking, saying it smelled amazing just from the aroma…
“But I said you should have the first bite, so I didn’t let them try any…
“Xavier, you really don’t know when something good is right in front of you.”
The more Isabella talked, the more wronged she felt. She hadn’t meant to get upset, but she couldn’t help adding that last part.
“So, I was wrong?”
Unexpectedly, Xavier didn’t argue.
Instead, his voice dropped lower–that deep, rich tone that, when soft, could melt anyone.
Isabella looked at him. The man’s expression had eased, no longer so cold and harsh.
His deep eyes stayed fixed on her, unreadable, full of complicated emotions.
“Of course you were.”
Isabella pouted and signaled for Xavier to put her down.
The maids had already brought the milk over. Iving heard what was said, as they handed it over, they couldn’t help speaking up.
“Mr. Moore, Mrs. Moore really didn’t add any ho peppers! We can vouch for that!”
“Yes, while Mrs. Moore was getting the ingrediens ready this afternoon, she kept telling us not to use anything too strong… She said your health isn’t great…”

Chapter 82 A Taste

The maids chimed in one after another, anxious as if worried Xavier might do something to Isabella
Seeing them defend her, Isabella’s face grew even more defiant. “Xavier, you hear that?”
Xavier stayed unreadable. He was about to set Isabella down when he noticed several maids rushing forward, wanting to help her.
But Xavier only pretended to let go, pulling Isabella right back against him.
“You can all go. Whatever Mrs. Moore and I need to say, we’ll say it alone,” Xavier told the maids quietly, his tone much gentler than usual.
The maids had no choice but to put the milk on the nearby table and quickly leave, though they kept looking back at Isabella every few steps.
Isabella wanted to get down from Xavier, but the man started walking again, carrying her straight back to the dining table and setting her down.
“Seems like you made a good choice. They’re completely on your side.”
“They’re just grateful I kept them here. You’re the one who had me pick them. You’re not going back on that, are you?”
Hearing this, Isabella worried Xavier might fire them again.
But in just half a day, she’d found these maids to be absolute sweethearts–not only thoughtful but also quick on the uptake.
She really had no idea where Xavier had found them.
“They grew up together in an orphanage,” Xavier said flatly, as if reading her thoughts. “If you like them, then I’m fine with it.”
Whether she liked them or not–did that even natter?
In his eyes, she was just the lady of the house in hame anyway. He had the final say on whoever he hired.
Isabella glanced at the dishes on the table, most of which were almost cold.
With that, she reached out and deliberately pulled the plate of pancakes in front of herself. “I’ll have these myself. You can eat something else. The other dishes all look pretty mild. No more doubts, right?”
