Isabella was still holding the frying pan. It was fairly heavy, but luckily Xavier had a firm hold on her arm, so she didn’t have to strain as much–otherwise, she most likely would have dropped it right there.
She quickly composed herself, pulled free from his grip, and hastily set the pan down on the nearby countertop.
“Xavier, are you okay?”
She stepped straight over to check on him. The plate on the floor was made of sturdy ceramic; it had broken into large chunks instead of tiny, scattered shards, so the mess wasn’t too bad.
Xavier watched as she anxiously examined his arms and even placed her hands gently on his waist to make sure he wasn’t hurt. His voice came out slightly unsteady. “I’m fine.”
“Why do you always have to sneak up and scare me like that?” Isabella finally stepped back, her tone laced with mild frustration.
Xavier let out a low, amused huff. “I just walked in like anyone else. You don’t jump when the housekeepers come and go, but you get this scared of me?”
Of course she did!
Isabella nearly blurted the words out. She had just been lost in her own thoughts, and as if on cue, she’d been thinking about him at that exact moment.
“Mr. and Mrs. Moore, are you both all right?”
Just then, a few housekeepers hurried over after hearing the crash. When they saw the broken plate on the floor, they immediately got to work cleaning it up.
They gently insisted that Isabella and Xavier leave the kitchen first, so neither of them would accidentally step on the broken pieces and get hurt.
Isabella said apologetically, “We’re fine. Sorry for the mess.”
After that, she transferred the pancakes onto a clean plate and carried them out of the kitchen.
Xavier followed closely behind her.
The dining table was already loaded with food–grilled meats, a creamy soup, and several
side dishes.

Isabella set the plate down, her cheeks faintly pink as she glanced at Xavier. “Let’s sit down
and eat.”
“Did you make all of this for me?” Xavier’s tone was unreadable.
Isabella murmured in agreement, sitting down first and scooping some rice and soup onto Navier’s plate.
But the man didn’t look like he planned to sit just yet. He stared at the plate of pancakes, his voice edged with faint sarcasm. “Aren’t you going to serve me that first?”
“You can have some if you’d like.” Isabella didn’t catch the teasing undertone in his words and quickly tore off a small piece of pancake, placing it on his plate. “I found the recipe online. It actually tastes really good…”
When she’d made it for the three kids earlier, they’d devoured it happily.
It was sweet and tangy with a subtle spicy kick, and had the soft, fluffy texture of an egg pancake.
“At least it doesn’t look burnt this time,” Xavier finally sat down, picking up the piece of pancake as he teased. “No ghost peppers hidden in there?”
Isabella suddenly caught on and let out a light laugh. “Xavier, do you really think I’m trying to poison you?”
“If you wanted to poison me, you could just do it to my face… no need to waste good food.”
If she really wanted him dead, he’d probably eat it anyway…
But this fake, overly sweet, nice act…
That would kill him slowly, without making a sound.
A chill settled in Xavier’s chest, and his eyes darkened.
Isabella was at a loss for words for a second. She wanted to be upset, but she couldn’t really blame him.
She had hurt him before, so it wasn’t like his suspicion came out of nowhere.
But still–she’d worked hard all afternoon to put together everything on this table!
A moment later, Isabella picked up a piece of pancake and stuffed it into her mouth. Xavier’s eyes widened slightly, and he grabbed her hand but she’d already eaten it.
Isabella’s face turned red from shoving too much in at once, her cheeks puffing out.

She swallowed in a few quick bites, her glossy eyes locked on Xavier as if she might cry at any second, looking completely pitiful..
Immediately. Xavier stood up and walked away from the table. When he came back, he placed a large glass of ice water in front of Isabella.
Isabella had just finished swallowing and casually took a sip.
But only because she was genuinely choking…
“Harry, come over right now.”
Just as Isabella caught her breath, Xavier’s sharp cold voice reached her ears again.
The man was already calling Harry!
“I’m fine… There’s no need to have Dr. Ashford come over…”
Isabella quickly said, keeping her voice low.
Xavier’s brow furrowed deeply. He covered the phone with one hand while reaching out to feel her forehead with the other.
Isabella’s body did feel warm, but it wasn’t a fever—she’d just eaten too fast.
