He was decked out in all black that day–a fitted cap pulled low, a sleek face mask, lightweight jacket, and a compact backpack. But against the sterile, bright white halls of the hospital, he stuck out like a sore thumb.
Bad call.
Skyler took a steadying breath as he glanced at his watch.
The target was heading toward the restroom.
Back when he’d slipped into the CEO’s office at Moore Group, Skyler had sprinkled a specialized, undetectable tracking powder over the man’s desk chair. Even the faintest transfer onto clothing would be enough–the sensor on his wrist could pick it up from yards away.
After days of waiting, he finally had the guy alone.
All he needed now was one drop of blood for a DNA match against his own.
A few seconds later, Skyler peered out from behind a corner just in time to see the figure vanish around the far end of the hallway. Slipping back into the stream of visitors and staff he trailed quietly.
According to his watch, the man had entered the men’s room. But when Skyler pushed inside, the place seemed empty. All the stall doors stood unlocked.
Syringe ready in his palm, Skyler moved carefully, easing open each door one by one.
Nothing.
Then, as he reached the last stall, he held his breath–only to feel a strong arm hook around his waist from behind, lifting him clean off the ground.
“Hey there, kid. You following me?”
The voice was cool and detached, spoken close to his ear. Skyler reacted instantly–twisting to shove against the man’s chest and kicking backward–but the man deflected each move with unsettling ease.
Xavier pinned Skyler’s arms behind his back, flattening them against the boy’s stomach, then locked him securely against his own body. Skyler dangled, facing away, legs swinging helplessly in the air.

Xavier let out a low chuckle, slightly winded. He hadn’t expected his tail to be some little runt. Almost amusing, really.
“Let me go! You jerk!”
Panic began to rise in Skyler’s chest. His flawless plan was falling apart–and his pride stung. In all five years of his life, no adult had ever managed to physically restrain him like this.
“You’re the one tailing me, and I’m the jerk?” Xavier scoffed. “Tell me why. Give me a good reason, and maybe I won’t haul you down to security.”
“I wasn’t following you! I just had to use the bathroom! You’re a grown man picking on a kid- how lame is that?”
Skyler was desperate now. If this guy actually called security and his parents found out, Jason and Lydia would never let him live it down. What would happen to his cool big–brother image then?
“If you just needed the bathroom, why were you sneaking along behind me the whole way?” Xavier’s tone only grew colder.
Skyler didn’t have a comeback. If this guy really was his dad… he was way too harsh! He was just a little kid!
But part of him… kind of liked it.
Thinking fast, Skyler bit down gently on his tongue and let out a loud, pitiful wail.
“What are you crying for now…?” Xavier frowned. One second the kid was all fight, the next he was sobbing like a toddler.
“Waaah… you’re hurting me–you’re squeezing my hands too tight… Mister, you’re so strong, it really hurts…”
Skyler turned on an Oscar–worthy performance, laying the pitiful act on thick. His tone shifted completely–soft, childish, vulnerable–though the crying remained loud and convincing.
A headache began to pulse behind Xavier’s temples. Almost instinctively, he loosened his hold, though something still felt off about the kid.
“Just tell me why you were-”

“Waaah…!”
Before Xavier could finish, Skyler burst into another round of loud, broken sobs.

Outside, a couple of people seemed to hear the commotion. One or two peeked cautiously into the restroom.
“Everything okay in here?”
Seeing a tall man restraining a small boy, they exchanged confused looks. Intimidated by Xavier’s commanding presence, neither stepped forward right away.
After an awkward pause, one spoke up softly, “Sir, maybe don’t be so rough with your son… Just a kid. You can talk it out. This is a hospital, after all…”
“Get out.”
Before they could say another word, Xavier gritted his teeth, his voice low and final.
They froze, then reluctantly backed away–though their concerned glances lingered on the boy.
