Chapter 92 Unexpected Encounter
It was clear the kid was targeting him… but why?

Once he’d successfully gotten the blood sample, Skyler quickly slipped into another restroom to change. The black cap, mask, and jacket were swapped out for a water–blue denim jacket.
When he emerged, he was rolling on a skateboard, blending effortlessly into the passing crowd.
“Results will be ready within 48 hours. You can pick them up then,” the lab tech had told him.
With the test done, Skyler was just about to leave the hospital, feeling pretty pleased with himself–until he stepped outside and spotted Hannah not far off.
Oh, great.
Whenever Skyler used his watch, Hannah could track his location. He’d assumed she was still under the weather these past few days, not exactly a morning person, and unlikely to be up and out so early…
“Skyler!”
She’d seen him. Her voice carried over before she did, and on instinct, Skyler stepped onto his board and pushed off, speeding away.
But after going half a block, it hit him–he’d already done what he came for. Why was he still running?
Just as he thought about stopping, he crashed straight into someone solid.
“Sorry, sir!”
The man–who looked like he might work out–took the impact but steadied Skyler by the shoulders, keeping him from tumbling onto the pavement.
Skyler noticed the white coat. A doctor, maybe?
“I’m okay… Did you get hurt?”
The man shifted slightly, revealing Skyler’s skateboard pinned under his leg. He picked it up and handed it back. “Hey, bud, you probably shouldn’t ride this inside hospital grounds. It’s easy to hurt yourself or someone else.”

Skyler’s eyes darted around. He wanted to explain that he was actually pretty good on the board, and he wasn’t just screwing around in public–he’d only brought it for a quick getaway if needed.
But after a second, he just nodded politely. “You’re right. Sorry about that.”
Seeing how well the kid took the correction, the doctor reached out and gave his head a light, approving ruffle.
“Skyler! What are you doing now?”
Just as Harry was brushing off his coat, Hannah caught up. And then she saw him.
Their eyes met, and for a long moment, neither said a word.
Skyler braced for a scolding, but it didn’t come. He glanced up and found them just… staring.
Eight seconds passed.
“Is this… your son?”
Harry spoke first, smoothly passing the skateboard to Hannah.
Hannah hesitated, then nodded, taking it without really knowing what to say.
Talk about a small world. The person you least want to run into always shows up at the worst possible time.
“Aun-
Skyler started to call out, but Hannah snapped back to reality and pulled him gently behind her. She shot him a look that said, “Not a word.”
Skyler pressed his lips together.
So there’s history here.
“Did he bump into you? I’m really sorry–let me apologize for him.”
“It’s fine. Your boy’s very polite–he already apologized.”
Skyler put it together then. Hannah was using him as a buffer. To avoid… whatever this was.
But he kind of liked this doctor. He seemed nice.

“Well, I should get going,” Hannah said, taking Skyler’s hand.

“Are you back at the hospital because you’re still not feeling well?” Harry clearly missed her cue to wrap things up.
“It’s nothing serious,” Hannah said quickly.
“Hold on, let me grab you some of the good meds from the pharmacy. On me.”
“Oh, that’s really not necessary-”
But Harry was already walking off, leaving Hannah no room to protest.
“Auntie,” Skyler whispered once he was gone, “why did you lie to that doctor?”
Hannah glared. “Grown–up stuff. Don’t ask.”
“He likes you, doesn’t he?”
Hannah didn’t answer, just turned to leave.
“Then I’ll go tell him you’re not actually my mom.”
“Skyler…”
“Hannah.”
Just as Hannah was about to lose her cool, Harry returned, jogging lightly. The pharmacy was close by, and he held a small paper bag of medication.
To avoid dragging it out, Hannah accepted it.
“Thank you.”
“Don’t mention it. After all, you still owe me two late–night dinners.”
Harry said it completely straight–faced, his smile still warm and gentle. But in that moment, he shifted from kind doctor to something a little more… playful.
Hannah’s face flushed, then paled. The late–night dinner thing–he was still bringing that up?
She’d thought mentioning a kid and a husband would’ve made any reasonable person back off…
And he’d said it right in front of Skyler.

“Ooh!” Skyler’s eyes lit up. “Dr. Ashford, are you asking her out?”

“Asking her out?” Harry paused, then waved a hand. “No, no–don’t get the wrong idea. I was just teasing your mom. We’re old classmates.”
He paused, then added thoughtfully, “Please don’t tell
your dad…”
To Hannah, that last line sounded completely intentional.
