Chapter 202
Norah’s POV:
Vivienne said that and just walked away.
The air seemed to freeze.
This is it.
Lucien slowly turned around.
Those eyes that were once full of warmth were now ice–cold–straight–up terrifying.
Step by step, he walked toward me.
“Child?”
He finally spoke, his voice low and rough, dripping with menace.
“What does she mean by ‘child‘?”
My brain raced like crazy in that moment.
Vivienne didn’t explain clearly–this was my only shot!
I forced myself to stay calm. “Miss Rossi’s got it wrong.”

“Wrong?” He took a step closer, his tall frame completely looming over me. “Norah, look me in the eye and tell me what exactly is wrong?”
“They’re Mateo’s godkids, kids he’s been fostering in Washington,” I said, my mind spinning fast, trying to sound as calm as possible. “He cares about them a lot, so the kids are close to him. Vivienne probably just saw us with the kids and jumped to conclusions…”
“Godkids?” Lucien cut me off, letting out a low chuckle. Norah, if you’re gonna make up stories, can you at least pick one that’s believable? Mateo Vega, the mafia godfather, really has time to play babysitter for some kids?”
“Believe it or not,” I pushed back, trying to keep my grond, “I don’t owe you an explanation about my friend’s personal life.”
“Friend?” He repeated the word like it tasted bad. “He holds you, kisses your forehead–that’s just friends? You two lived together in Washington for three years and you’re telling me that’s all it was? Norah, your lying skills are seriously pathetic.”
“Yeah.” I lifted my chin and stared him down. “He showed up when I was at my lowest, gave me a home, a place where I could feel safe. While you were busy putting on that grand wedding show with your fiancee, he was the one who stayed by my side! Mateo is family

Lucien suddenly grabbed my wrist so hard it felt like he was about to crush my bones.
“Family?!”

He yanked me close, his hot breath hitting my face. “So you’re just fine living in the house he gave you, taking care of other people’s kids? Norah, since when did you get so damn kind?”
“Let go! Lucien, who the hell are you to ask me that? Don’t forget–you’re the one who’s married!”
“I’m saying it again–the wedding was fake!”
“But your guilt when you took that bullet for Amélie? That was real! The way you stayed by her bedside, all tender and caring? That was real too! Stop lying to me!” tried to push him away, but he gripped my hand tight and yanked me close. Suddenly, we were so close I could feel his breath on my face.
“Norah, don’t make me lock you up.”
Tears welled up in my eyes, my voice cracking with hurt and frustration. “Lucien, you’re hurting me… You always do this–whenever things don’t go your way, you turn to violence?”
My sudden weakness hit him like a punch to the gut. The fire in his eyes got stuck in his throat.
He loosened his grip a little.
The madness in his gaze shifted to something messy–confusion and doubt.
He didn’t let go, just eased up and started rubbing my wrist with his rough thumb–the same wrist he’d already left red marks on.
“Oh, what’s this? Some kind of show? Mr. Constantine, bullying a woman? Real impressive,” Katarina finally couldn’t hold back and strolled in from outside, her voice lazy. Irina followed behind her, scowling.
“Yeah, if you’re so pissed off, why not hit the gym? Showing off in front of Norah–real classy.”
Lucien ignored their baiting.
He just stared at me, his eyes swirling with suspicion, jealousy, and fear.
He was scared.
Seizing the moment when he got distracted, I yanked my hand free and stepped back, putting some space between us.
“I’m done.”
I looked at him, my voice heavy with exhaustion.
Then I turned around without another glance and headed to my room.
I slammed the door shut behind me and leaned against he cold wood, realizing my legs were shaking like
crazy.

I rushed to the window and stared out at the churning waves. My heart was pounding so hard I thought it might burst out of my chest.
No. I can’t freak out.
I took deep, steady breaths.
Step one was won.
But I knew this was just the beginning.
Lucien wasn’t an idiot. He wouldn’t fall for this lie for long.
I pulled out my phone, my fingers trembling so badly I kept hitting the wrong buttons.
Finally, I dialed Mateo.
“Nono?”
“Teo,” my voice was dry and shaky, tears threatening to spill. “Vivienne showed up. She brought up the kids. Lucien–he’s suspicious.”
On the other end of the line, Mateo’s voice instantly turned serious, laced with apology. “Sorry, Nono. She snooped through my computer–it was my fault. I’ll so it out right away and get the kids out of Washington.”
“No need.” I took a deep breath. “Running away won’t fix anything.”
“Lucien’s no fool. Once he smells something fishy, he’ll throw everything he’s got into digging it up. Where the hell can I run off to with the kids?”
“What needs facing has to be faced.” My voice was soft. But… not right now. I need time.”
“Nono, you…”
“Teo, I need a document. A perfect one, with no holes, about Leo and Luna.” I spoke fast, my voice trembling with nerves. “Background info, adoption papers, birth certificates… everything. It has to prove they’re your godchildren, nothing to do with me, and definitely nothing to do with him.”
